For those of you who don't know, Bad Chopper is the new band of ex-Ramone CJ Ward.
When Los Gusanos broke up, CJ Ramone (real name Ward) had pretty much given up on doing a band and had resigned himself to family life. That is until a chance meeting with Mark from Out Cold where they talked about starting a project. This resulted in the formation of the Warm Jets, name later changed to BAD CHOPPER. The music is simple but brilliant punk rock. The inevitable Ramones similarities are present, but it's not derivative at all. It's been said they're a little more Stooges-ey, but it's really hard to describe, except to say that it's superb punk rock. It's much more of a return to a basic sound compared to Los Gusanos. They first recordeded a couple of singles and toured over the NYC area, Japan and South America.
After a seemingly-interminable wait, they released their debut full-length. It took almost forever to finish, but alas, here it is: the debut full-length of Bad Chopper is finally out and ready for consumption, and it was worth the wait. This outfit has been called the best ex-Ramone effort out of them all, and we would have to agree. CJ brings his signature songwriting and sense of melody to these 12 tracks of simple yet effective rockin' punk tunes. Not attempting to resurrect the Ramones, but rather just channelling his innate gift for writing great catchy, from-the-hip punk rock. One listen to this and you'll understand how he made the cut in that most important punk rock institution that was the Ramones. This recording is given loving production care by longtime Ramones collaborator/producer Daniel Rey and features lead work by the great Walter Lure (Heartbreakers/Waldos).
