Only days since the blockhead was sent packing and 8 years of domestic terror has come at last to an end!!!!!
Well needless to say I’m hesitantly pleased. A real positive, upbeat place for me!
I was however reminded by recent events of Franklin’s quote regarding our government and I believe it needs to be restated, over and over again…
Just after the completion and signing of the Constitution, in reply to a woman's inquiry as to the type of government the Founders had created, Benjamin Franklin said, "A Republic, if you can keep it."
A Republic is representative government ruled by law (the Constitution). A democracy is direct government ruled by the majority (mob rule). A Republic recognizes the inalienable rights of individuals while democracies are only concerned with group wants or needs (the public good). Lawmaking is a slow, deliberate process in a Constitutional Republic requiring approval from the three branches of government, the Supreme Court and individual jurors (jury-nullification). Lawmaking in our unlawful democracy occurs rapidly, requiring approval from the whim of the majority as determined by polls and/or voter referendums.
I have nothing but high hopes, optimism for great things, confidence in our direction at last all balanced with some trepidation and fear that the right wing wack jobs rally much like we did the past four years and regroup with sufficient strength to stand a nutter like caribou Barbie and actually convince enough people to put them back on top. We cannot get complacent and allow this to happen again. The king is dead and with any luck, a lot of his self-interest riddled policies with him. I can only hope that finally what goes around has at last come around. At last, the Supreme Court seats are safe from right wing threat, that there are striped outfits and prison cells waiting for the criminals of this outgoing administration and that President Obama escapes the temptations of this office that seduced Bill Clinton and got us in this mess.
"A wise man will not leave his rights to the mercy of chance, nor wish it to prevail through the power of the majority. There is but little virtue in the action of masses of men." Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)I am extremely lucky to have a wonderful wife and family to love and be love by and a large circle of very special friends whom I hold close and enrich my life greatly. You all know who you are!!! I try to go through this life with the idea of leaving it in a better state than I found it. I give of my time and my money to organizations that face the challenges of the world today. I manage my resources with green funds that invest in ventures that are positive and are free of arms manufactures, animal testing, support the environment and basic human rights. I support local organizations that work for political change, to help eliminate domestic violence and aid animal rights. It has gotten easier in recent years to be able to add this dimension to your life. You should seek out those opportunities. It’s worth it and not difficult.Home | Browse | Search | Invite | Film | Mail | Blog | Favorites | Forum | Groups | Events | Videos | Music | Comedy | Classifieds Home | Browse | Search | Invite | Film | Mail | Blog | Favorites | Forum | Groups | Events | Videos | Music | Comedy | Classifieds
