Cunt is an English vulgarism that refers to the human female genitalia. The word is considered by some to be extremely offensive, and by others to be merely vulgar. Other less offensive vulgarisms are pussy, twat, gash, beaver, fanny (in British English) and snatch. Vagina is commonly used as a replacement for cunt, though strictly speaking it refers only to part of the internal female genitalia, unlike the less commonly used vulva, which refers to the externally visible genitals. Cunt encompasses both.Other than "vagina" and "vulva," English lacks non-vulgar words for the anatomy denoted by cunt, but other languages have at least a few of them. The Sanskrit yoni is an example. The little-used Latin pudendum is also such a word. According to many dictionaries, it is often used in the plural (pudenda), and can also apply to male genitalia. Its sense is "private part or parts, especially female." Other polite but nonspecific English words, usually spoken by children or by their parents, are thing, ya-ya, or coochie etc.Cunt is often used to refer to persons, both male and female, usually in a non-specific derogatory sense: "John (or Jane) is such a cunt." In Australian English cunt is not used to refer to a female person; the Macquarie Dictionary gives a definition of cunt as "a despicable man".The earliest citation of the anatomical form of the word in the Oxford English Dictionary is a reference to the London street name "Gropecunt Lane" dated to about 1230. The earliest citation of the word applied to a person as a term of vulgar abuse is from 1929.
