About Me

Marke Lester has been involved with some of the most intriguing and memorable music to come out of Chicago for almost twenty years, including Spiney Norman, Thunk, Mosquitohead, No Love Lost, Everest, and most recently Labrador Dali (www.labradordali.com), Phil Circle (http://www.myspace.com/philcircle) and Hawk From A Handsaw (www.jeffchurchwell.com). His formal musical education includes instruction in viola, piano, classical guitar, drums, percussion, voice and theory. Through a combination of curiosity and osmosis, Marke has been quietly amassing a vault of material, raging from the soft and subtle to the loud and levitating, a few of which made it into regular live rotation in Thunk and Everest. In 2005 Marke decided to strike out on his own after receiving much encouragement and some vocal coaching by Wendy Hart. A four-song demo, entitled "A Sound Seen Distant" and featured here, encapsulates the peak of Marke’s early period of writing, around 1995, as well as a taste of his newer material (Unencumbered was written last year). Recent shows have ranged from small coffehouses to hundreds-in-attendance performances at festival-type venues, with both his band, Exhibit A, and alongside other singer/songwriters such as Robert Emmett, Aaron Bowland, and Gus Kenneth from Everest. Marke is currently using his "non-e" identity as right-hand man in Robert Emmett’s new project, Labrador Dali, which is steadily beginning to amass a list of sightings around Chicago, AND as the skinsman for Chicago’s own Phil Circle, AND AND as drummer/backup singer in Hawk From A Handsaw, the vehicle for the music of Jeff Churchwell. But I have NOT ceased my activity! New versions of the previously posted songs are available here for listen (see below for details). Basically, I’ve got almost four albums written, and have not started recording the first one! So, the sooner I get off my ass...Please enjoy and leave comments! Critique at will! Knock me off my self-imposed pedestal! I wouldn’t mind getting paid for this sort of thing, so your input is invaluable. Thanks for listening, and for reading.
