About Me

I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio in a musical family. My mother, Mary Lou, played the piano and organ. She played in our church and so I was along every Sunday and Holidays. My father sang in the choir. I was also in the choir, too. I started with the piano at 5 and then with 7 I learned to play the violin. With 13 I started with the harmonica. There was at the time (late 60's) a big surge of blues coming out with John Mayall, Canned Heat, John Lee Hooker and Taj Mahal. It wasn't until much later when I was 34 and living in San Francisco where I started to meet musicians and they encouraged me to pick up the harp again and to sing. I then joined the group Elmer Lee Thomas, a delta acoustic blues band. It was a great starting point for me. In 1994 I then decided to move to Berlin and try and give it a go. I met several musicians, one of which was Nina Davis. Together we formed the Alley Cats, which are: Tom Blacksmith on bass and Jan Hirte on guitar. I also met Hattie St. John, where we put together a duo called Ladies First. Not only do I work with these fine musicians, I also work with Blues Rudy. Sometimes London Phillips (from my Elmer Lee days) comes to Berlin and we perform together. I really enjoy my work and my colleagues, without them it would not have been possible and so easy.
