My name is Jonathan James McCoy, but people call me Jack for short. I am the District Attorney for New York County (Manhattan). For information about the NY District Attorney's office, please visit our website at www.manhattanda.org
I was born and raised in Chicago by an abusive alcoholic father. He was a cop for many years, walking a beat in South Chicago. He was also an egomaniacal control freak who always had to have everything his way or no way at all. He would beat my poor mother into submission to get his way, and many-a-time she was forced to lock herself in the basement to escape his brutality. My dream as a young man was to become a cop like my father, but he wanted me to become a lawyer instead. My father finally died of cancer in 1986. So it goes.
While my father's influence still shows through from time to time, I have developed something of a rebellious personality... I ride a Yamaha motorcycle to work. I love scotch, and it's rumored that I've become an alcoholic like my old man. I have had at least 3 affairs with my assistants over the years, one of which is now my ex-wife. I also had a fourth affair with my assistant Claire Kincaid, but it was brought to a violent end when she was killed in a car accident with a drunk driver.
Upholding the criminal laws of the state, county, and city of New York is my passion and my life's work. I enjoy prosecuting murderers and criminals to the fullest extent of the law. I am an advocate of capitol punishment, but only in the most extreme cases. The quirks and ambiguosities of New York law intrigue me, and I particularly like manipulating the system to punish offenders. For this reason, as well as my oratory skills during closing arguments, I am the bane of defense attorneys and sometimes judges as well.
I am pleased to announce the creation of a new group in my honor by my number one fan, Amanda. Please take a moment to visit it HERE
