Jan Allan

About Me

Jan Allan: Trumpet, is one of the most important musicians in Scandinavian jazz. Born in Falun (1934) he studied piano from age 6 and became involved in jazz at 14, when he took up the trumpet. Jan moved to Stockholm, where he played in dance bands at Nalen (the famous Swedish music place). He started to play in a quartet with Swedish bassist Georg Riedel (which became The Modern Swedes - a quintet were Jan played both trumpet and piano). He then worked with Carl-Henrik Norin (1955-57) and Rolf Billberg (1960-63), Arne Domnérus, Lars Gullin as well as his own bands. Jan was also a member of the Swedish Radio Jazzgroup and played a lot with singer Monica Zetterlund (sometimes in the now classic variety shows with Tage Danielsson and Hasse Alfredsson). Jan got a gold record for his first album as a leader (Jan Allan-70 on Phono Suecia). There you can here Jan as the majorsoloist with a large jazz ensemble, and also in small group settings with Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen. In the 80s Jan played with a trio - Trio Con Tromba - together with Georg Riedel and Bengt Hallberg (later Stefan Nilsson). Jan has played with many visiting american musicians like Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, John Lewis, Red Mitchell, Roger Kellaway, Bob Brookmeyer, Thad Jones etc and of course with every Scandinavian musician you can think of. Nowadays you can hear Jan play together with Jan Strinnholm, Rune Gustafsson/Georg Riedel, Jacob Karlzon/Georg Riedel, Christina von Bülow Trio, Bertil Jonasson Quintet, Erik Norström, Lars Sjösten Octett among others.
