In 1980 Roberto Zanetti embarked upon his career as a composer writing songs in collaboration with Zucchero Fornaciari.
In 1983 Roberto composed, produced and sang his first "dance" record, entitled "Don’t cry tonight", under the stage name "Savage".
The song was a great success, first in Italy followed by the rest of Europe.
After a few years spent on world tours, Roberto decided to step up his activity as a producer by first building recording studios (Casablanca Recordings), and subsequently establishing his own record label (DWA Records). It was 1989 and the first record released was "No lo hago por dinero" by Raimunda Navarro, which went on to become a club hit in Italy and the UK.
The same year saw the DWA Label’s first worldwide success, the single "Easy" by Ice MC.
This track was followed by a further two singles, "Cinema" and "Scream"; and the first album entitled "Cinema".
Both the singles and the album met with outstanding worldwide success, and Ice MC’s fame was secured.
From 1990-91, DWA continued to release singles by new artists, amongst which the most important were: "Pianonegro" by Pianonegro, "Party children" by Wareband feat.Tad Robinson, "Vocalize" by Scattt, "Going back" by Willy Morales, "Scatt and bebop" by Scattt.A period of great world successes began in 1992.
The first hit was "Please don’t go" by Double You, and was the single responsible for launching the “covermania†phenomenon throughout the world.
The song was first released in Italy, then an English record label (known as Network) applied for the licence to release it in the UK.
As the song was already under licence to another company in the UK, DWA turned down the request from Network. Nevertheless, Network went on to make an exact copy of Double You’s "Please don’t go", sung by the English group "KWS". The Network copy came out before the Double You version and went to the top of the English and American charts. However, Double You triumphed in the rest of the world selling more than four million copies.
Subsequently, DWA won a court case against Network, who were ordered to pay damages.
In the years that followed, DWA devoted itself to the Double You project, releasing new singles ("We all need love" and "Who’s fooling who") and the first album ("We all need love").
Amongst the few records that DWA recorded by other artists in this period, were those by Netzwerk, DJ Bobo and CB Milton.
Soon after, a new single by Ice MC, "Take away the colour", was released.
The song didn’t realise significant sales, but it prepared the way for the future production of the artist and set the "eurodance" fashion throughout Europe.Shortly afterwards, two further singles by Ice MC, "Think about the way" and "It’s a rainy day", were released. These two songs, together with the album "Ice n’green", were to consolidate the artist’s worldwide fame.
The album sold about 800,000 copies in Europe (250,000 in France alone), whereas the singles totalled more than two million copies. One of the singles was also to be part of the soundtrack of the cult movie "Trainspotting".
During these same years (93-94) DWA also released “Rhythm of the night†by Corona and their follow up singles, “Try me outâ€, “Baby baby†and “I don’t wanna be a star†plus the album “Rhythm of the nightâ€.
“Rhythm of the night†was a worldwide no.1 hit which, along with the other singles, sold millions of copies.
At that time DWA was the no.1 label on the official single sales chart in Italy selling more copies than all of their other competitors (BMG, Sony, Universal, EMI, etc).In the years that followed DWA started to release records by the artist Alexia, produced by Robyx and under a partnership with Sony, who handled the promotion and distribution of the artist worldwide. Alexia quickly became one of the most successful artists in Italy, collecting eight consecutive no.1 singles and various gold discs for album sales.
Following a period of no releases DWA Records started to produce new material in 2004 (Ice MC’s “It’s a miracleâ€) and in 2005 (Creavibe’s “Wonderful Lifeâ€).
