Been at it for 25 years, so am relatively 'handy' on guitar, although I now consider pedal steel my main 'thing'. Equally happy playing steel, acoustic, electric or adding 12-string Rickenbacker or BVs, I am open to serious offers of studio sessions or live work in any genre.
The music here comes from a variety of things I have been involved with. If you like what you hear, contact me via "Messages" or
[email protected]
I'm currently pedal-steeler, guitarist and BV-ist for "The Wynntown Marshals" and, in 2008, completed a 12-date tour of UK/Ireland with Chuck Prophet (ex Green On Red), and played with Jason and the Scorchers (see "Reviews" album in "Pics") and at Belladrum Festival. I do, of course, have "previous"...
"Chickweed" (myspace.com/dunsydunsmore) had a Radio 1 "Single of the Week" with "Squawk", and thought we were going to be pop stars. Alas, despite oodles of sugar-coated, countrified pop tunes, we got nowhere, I became disillusioned, and left.
I then wrote and performed with Stephanie Kirkham. We recorded a BBC session before our demo generated interest at EMI. This opened the door for Stephanie to eventually sign to Hut Records (RIP) - by which time we had gone our separate ways.
Around the same time, ex-Joyriders Murdo MacLeod, Craig Smith and I formed "Secret Six", stewed over portastudios, wrote and recorded a bundle of skewed pop songs (see www.myspace.com/meetsecretsix)
I then formed "eventide" with singer-songwriter JJ Barry, Scott Tobin (Dropkick) on bass and drummer Alan Cranston (Hobotalk, Ainslie Henderson), wrote around 100 songs, got airplay on Radio 1, Beat 106 and XFM, then imploded in 2003.
Ex-Chickweeder Andy's return from Dublin led to the formation of "slowjet" with ex-eventider Scott. We shared writing and singing duties and that worked well for us... Our debut EP was described by The Big Issue as having "choruses so infectious you'd need a factor 40 sun lotion to block them out" and told that we "deserve to be huge on an international stage". We followed this with the Zane Lowe-approved "Empty" and "Black Cross" singles, then wrote, recorded and put out a full-length album "It Takes A Stretch of Water", which was "Album of the Week" by XFM on its release.
Then, in January 2008, I was asked to join the Wynntown Marshals full-time and, as a result, slowjet was 'put on ice' indefinitely.
As well as the Marshals, I have been involved in recording collaborations with Oxford-based electronica artists Kid Wax, The White Harts, and (ex-Summerhill guitarist) Tom Crook's Band of Hope. Most recently I have played some live shows with ex-Dead Beat Club singer-songwriter Andy Tucker, as well as playing steel, electric and acoustic guitar on his forthcoming "Scattered Family" album. I also added electrics and some steel to Edinburgh singer-songwriter Jay Brown's "These Streets" EP and played some guitar on Borders-based Keith McCraw's debut solo album.
Since early 2009, I have been in the studio playing, singing and co-producing the Wynntown Marshals' new album with Graham Deas (KT Tunstall, Super Furry Animals, etc.) and a couple of the other guys from the band. I also have a handful of 'session' gigs coming up with Andy Tucker and Jay Brown.
