Daniel Wise was born and raised in pick-up truck and shotgun land in the Appalachian Mountains. His introduction into the music business came as an artist, touring as a bass player and writing music in bands. Dan began to prefer the recording side of being an artist and decided to move to New York, purchased some recording equipment and set up a tiny home studio in Hell's Kitchen where he proceeded to record demos for everyone under the sun.
Dan went on to use his demo savings to rent a commercial space in Chelsea, which he turned into a studio, and slowly built up to eventually include his dream-desk - a 1973 Neve 8038 which happened to be the original board from the Kink's KONK Studios. Six years later, Dan built The Shed, on Third Avenue in NYC. He upgraded his desk to an AMEK 9098i to facilitate more complex mixing schemes, but couldn't part with the Neve, so he racked the entire board and put both consoles in his control room. Then came 24 channels of discreet API mic pres and eqs complete with an original power supply. In March of 2008—after the sale of the Shed Building, Daniel moved his entire control room to Soundmine Recording Studios in Pennsylvania, where he has teamed up with Daniel Malsch both studio-wise, and as the production team, Daniel and Daniel.
Dan brings a great deal to the table when making a record. Aside from his talents as a producer and engineer, Dan is a talented songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. As an artist, he conveys a certain sensitivity when working on a project, and describes his goal when making a record as staying invisible. "I don't have a signature sound, my signature is bringing the utmost out of the artist. My sound is not part of the equation, I just try to capture the artist at those moments when they are at their best, in the best possible way both artistically and sonically." Daniel has done over 100 records with artists such as SCISSOR SISTERS for Universal, THE SECRET MACHINES for Warner Brothers, EVEN THE ODD and LIBBY JOHNSON for Wrong Records, THE EXIT for Windup, and critically acclaimed records for 22 BRIDES for Universal. He also produced two albums for MACEO PARKER (WAR/EFA), projects that involved performances by ANI DIFRANCO, JAMES TAYLOR, and PRINCE, in addition to producing and co-writing several tracks with JOAN OSBORNE. Dan also produced the debut album for Danish recording artist MARIE FRANK (BMG) who won 4 European Grammies including Best Pop Album, Best New Artist, and Best Female Vocals.
Daniel is currently producing records for Libby Johnson (acclaimed singer/songwriter formerly of 22 Brides), Michael Wolff (quoted as “…one of today’s best jazz composers…â€), The Jones Street Station for Smith Street Records, and Nat and Alex Wolff for Sony/Columbia.

DANIEL AND DANIEL
Sometimes things happen in odd ways. One night in the fall of 2007, Daniel Wise, who had recently sold his studio building in Manhattan, was contemplating what the next move would be for himself and his production career. Living both in PA and in NYC, he decided on a whim to do a search for the PA zip code he was in, with the words, “recording studio." Only one valid result came up. That result was Soundmine Recording Studios in East Stroudsburg, PA. Dan looked up the Myspace page for it, and found that the studio had a good live room, and thought it could be even better with more gear. The name of the owner was Daniel Malsch. Another Dan. So, to follow the thread, he picked up the phone and on the second ring heard, “studio!†-and the two Dan's decided to meet up. Thier partnership began with Dan Wise moving all the aforementioned gear out of storage and into Soundmine. But that’s not the end of the story.
Life can be pretty interesting if you allow it to be. After moving everything in, Dan W. started to track his next production there. Being around the studio for a couple of weeks and seeing Dan M. there every day, it started to become clear through their conversations that Dan M.'s real passion was to mix records. Secretly, Dan W. had grown weary of mixing, and really only wanted to produce the tracks. A new idea revealed itself. “Why don’t you try mixing a track on this record and see how it goes?†said Dan to Dan. A couple of days later, and without any gnashing of teeth, it became clear that this combination worked amazingly well.
Both Daniels bring an immense amount of experience, knowledge, and talent to any record production. Both have worked with a staggering number of artists, record labels, and other producers. Combined they have produced and mixed over 200 albums.
Daniel and Daniel are currently working on new recordings. For bookings, please email [email protected].
