Martial arts training. I am currently a Kenpo student and instructor at Pasadena Kenpo Karate in Pasadena, CA. American Kenpo is a practical martial art designed to ensure safety from outside threats of danger. Self Defense is a central theme in Kenpo and it considerably increases the likelyhood of surviving an attack and walking away unharmed from a street altercation. Kenpo IS NOT A SPORT! In other words, we have no rules to abide by and we are not taught to fight in the confines of a cage or ring. We have no limitations to how and where to strike an opponent, and we have no limitations on the weapons we choose to use in any situation, be it natural weapons (i.e. fist, elbow, and knee strikes) or otherwise. While I have a tremendous amount of respect for cage fighting, boxing, wrestling, etc. and the amount of work and athleticism it takes to become skilled at all of the above, it's my opinion that they can have little effect in the streets where there are no rules, no time limits, and no one can call the fight for you if you cannot continue; this is where environment, multiple attackers, and/or the use of guns/knives/sticks/bottles etc. may render a compitant fighter virtually powerless. I currently hold rank at 1st degree brown belt and I expect to advance to black in 2008....Because of the amount of respect and curiosity I have for the grappling arts I recently began training in the martial-sports of grappling: both in Judo and Jujitsu. I want to be perfectly clear that I am approaching these arts as sports, NOT as a means for self defense. Pass it down...
