THE GREAT KALI

An Irishman, an Indian, and a Puerto Rican walk into a bar…… This may sound like the beginning to a bad joke, but believe me, this is no joke. One night in late winter 2008, Anthony Wiese, Dan Vales, and Omar Ahmed walked into a Bar as friends, but they walked out as The Great Kali. The powerhouse trio went on to play their first show in early May at the Night Cap on Irving Park and have played close to 20 shows in the short time since. Along with a few parties and a Battle of the Bands under their belts, The Great Kali has played at the Underground Lounge, the Bottom Lounge, and The Mutiny, among many other venues. Their sound has been compared to a mix between Queens of the Stone Age and Mudhoney, yet even comparisons to these great bands do no justice to The Great Kali’s unique sound. With thunderous and penetrating percussion, Omar provides a strong and intense backbone to their songs. On Vocals and guitar is Anthony Wiese. With skills on guitar comparable to some of the greats and an emotional voice, Anthony provides the band with an energetic front-man and powerful lyrics. Last, but certainly not least, is Dan Vales on the Bass. Dan provides the hypnotic background vocals that blend seamlessly with his own powerful base lines. The Great Kali provides an incomparable sound and an electrifying stage show which is not to be missed.-Jennifer Thomas
