Diamond Head / Breakout Degree / Moment of Clarity
- The Junction, York 04/05/09
There was a strange air in the room tonight, a hesitant expectancy that if ever there was a gig to go to in Yorkshire this was it. The NWOBHM was in town and The whole of York was packed into the humble back room of the Junction to see it, The reason perhaps why it was a little hot and sweaty in there! First on we’re Moment of Clarity a band picked because of their loyal following and rightly so. Even though they have only been gigging since September they have come a long way since then, getting to the finals of York BOTB and claiming responsibility for some unbelievable mosh-pit injuries. Tonight they were on form if not a little out of place for the night. Despite the inconvenience of having two drum kits on stage they powered their away through the set with great confidence. Their songs were riffy and and the Front man’s scream was piercing, combining tight playing and great vocal harmonies.
Next on we’re Breakout Degree playing their first York gig for what seems like an age, having been gigging almost non-stop around the North for the last 6 months. The guys oozed confidence and rocked out as if they owned the venue, perhaps they felt like it was good to be playing at home. Songs tarnished with what can only be described as a regeneration of the old school British Heavy Metal and the twisted with a contemporary edge. Adrenalin was clearly responsible for the tempo of the first two songs; a slight I’m sure they and their fans forgave within moments as the front two rows of rock lovers were miming the lyrics. Certainly a band of the future.
Next on were of course the mighty Diamond Head, Metallica claim they are amongst their greatest influence along with any other self respecting rock band that know their beans! They ploughed through a flawless set with all the famous tracks every rocker expected! ‘Am i Evil’ and ‘It’s Electric’ we’re beautiful replayed as if they we’re only written yesterday. A few people commented on the fact that the amazing singer (Nick Tart) had an air of Bruce Dickenson about him, i guess i could see it but i don’t know if he could rock a crowd of 200 as well as he could Nick could tonight. I Think you’ll find that the size of monitors doesn’t differ that much to the ones at stadium gigs!? They certainly adhered to the alcohol fuelled promises of yester-year they rocked out as if they were on the ‘borrowed time’ of 1982. Diamond Head have plans to rock the rest of Europe before the Drummer goes back to New York by in August - Here’s hoping they come back to York sooner rather than later!!
