About Me

Ohio Avenue exploded onto the rock music scene in 2005 with a sound that demanded attention. Pairing high energy live performances with captivating lyrics, these Alabama natives are determined to relay a message of hope and love through their exciting approach to melodic rock.
The band started as worship leaders in their local church, but the group soon felt God taking them in a different direction. They created a new project that focused on writing original music, which eventually became known as “Ohio Avenue.” Their name was inspired by a street in Indiana where lead singer Derek Williams grew up. “When my parents divorced, my mother felt God urging her to move to Alabama (along with my brother and I),” says Williams. “We ended up leaving our lives and comforts behind to follow God’s direction. Fast forward a few years and I felt like I was back in the same situation. I was playing in a worship band and God began to urge me to leave and follow the new direction he was giving me. I thought about how I felt when I left my old street and how God took us out of comfort and security to follow his voice. It just made sense to call the band Ohio Avenue. To me, Ohio Avenue is about leaving everything behind to follow God’s direction.”
Though relatively new to the Christian rock scene, the band has managed to make a powerful impact. They have been working with producer Barry Blair (Audio Adrenaline, Bleach, Poor Man’s Riches) on a 5 song EP, and they have plans to finish a full length album. Their first single from the EP, “Close to Me,” has been the most requested song on the Jon Walden Show at 93.7 WDJC in Birmingham, AL. Ohio Avenue has landed opening slots for bands like Kutless and Superchick and they recently won the Indie Community.com Talent Search, beating out over 75 other regional bands. During the fall of 2007, the band will be part of the 2007 Mayhem Tour, a ministry partnership of XXXChurch.com and World Impact Wrestling (a Christian pro-wrestling organization). With a focus on sexual purity, the tour will feature Christian music, wrestling, and a debate with the Pastor of XXXChurch and Ron Jeremy. Ohio Avenue continues to leave “comfort and security” for the sake of the gospel.
Although they are accomplished musicians, the band remains focused on ministry. They value authenticity and honesty in their music and their lives. Lead singer Derek Williams says, “I think the whole basis of our music is that we are all complete disasters. We are not and never will be perfect. Christian or Non-Christian, we all need a savior. So, I think people can relate because we don’t come from the perspective of ‘We’re perfect Christians trying to show all the imperfect people how they need salvation.’ We want to let people know that in the midst of all your pain and disappointments, there is a God who still loves you.”
As of today, Ohio Avenue is traveling and performing at churches all over the Southeast. They hope that their music will impact the people they meet in a meaningful way. The band wants to fulfill the call on their lives, and hopefully, help others to do the same.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

"Ohio Avenue is a group of Godly guys that have a passion to praise the Lord through the musical gifts that God has blessed each member with. They have an exciting explosive show that will have your students excited about praising the risen savor. My students have never had such a great time. I highly recommend having them at your church. I can promise it will truly bless your ministry as well as theirs."
Brandon Robinson - Student Pastor
Iron City Baptist Church - Anniston, AL

"The guys in Ohio Avenue were the most professional young adults we have met in a long time. We were just in awe of them – their passion, their spirit, just everything about them. They were absolutely wonderful. It was really good to meet some young people who are on fire for God. The response we got was “You have to have them back!”
Sharon Fox – Booking Agent
The Flood Venue – Mobile, AL

"Ohio Avenue was absolutely amazing! They handled themselves very professionally and were very cordial to everyone, including the older generation who attended the concert. I felt they were grounded in their faith and very committed to being Christian artists. It was apparent in their presence. They were also very open to listening and talking to members of our youth group, which impressed our youth. They welcomed the opportunity to spending time with our youth group, which as we all know, impacts all youth today. Positive influences in the lives of youth today is always a plus."
Linda Teague - Youth Director
Prattville Wesleyan Church - Prattville, Alabama

"I would recommend Ohio Avenue to any youth leader. I have hosted Ohio Avenue and seen them in concert several times. They are both passionate for Christ and awesome in concert. At every event they are personable and connect immediately with teenagers."
Rusty Sizemore – Youth Pastor
Clearbranch UMC – Trussville, AL

"Ohio Avenue was awesome! Everyone in the band was friendly and co-operative. They really demonstrated the love of Christ to our young people. Their sound was absolutely terrific and the students loved them. It was the best concert they we have ever had here. We've had some popular groups in concert at our church and they were good, but Ohio Avenue was over the top. I pray that they will stay humble and never change."
