General DEFAO

Defao Matumona, known as Le Général DEFAO is increasingly popular as a singer, dancer and band leader. He started singing in local bands in kinshasa as early as 1976, for instance on Orchestre Suka Movema, Forgo Stars, Korotoro and Somo West. Defao was in fluenced by Zaiko Langa Langasingers of early years Papa Wemba, Nyoka Longo, Gina Efonge and Evoloko, but Tabu Ley Rochereau was and still his main inspiration. In 1981, Defao enters Grand Zaiko Wa Wa, the band of guitar wizzard Felix Manuaku. Between 1983 and 1981, he is part of Choc Stars led by Ben Nyamabo.In 1991, he created his own band, LES BIG STARS and recorded a numbers of albums since. A gifted singer and dancer, Defao has become quite famous in Africa. He was one of the congolese musicians who valued the importance of TV appearance and video clips as a means to gain success. Toujours bien il a , sans nul doute, franchi des paliers. Son parcours musical est typiquement congolais. Il debute dans la chanson, en 1976, dans de petits groupes, d’un quartier populeux de Kinshasa, Suka Movema, Forgo Stars, Korotoro et Somo West. Ses modeles se nomment, a l’epoque, Papa Wemba, Nyoka Longo, Gina Efonge et Evoloko, quatre chanteurs du groupe Zaiko des annees soixante-dix. Mais celui auquel il s’identifie le plus, cote chant, c’est Tabu Ley Rochereau. La consecration arrive pour lui, cinq ans plus tard. Defao intègre le Grand Zaiko Wawa, du guitariste Felix Manuaku. Les Kinois découvrent alors un jeune chanteur élégant et, ce qui ne gache rien, bon danseur. De 1983 a 1991, il fait les beaux jours du gourpe Choc Stars, dirigé par Ben Nyamabo. Defao sait que le monde vit une ère d’image. Il opte alors pour de frequentes apparitions à la télévision. Ce qui contribue a asseoir sa popularité. Son succès grandissant et son charisme inné le conduisent alors à voler de ses propres ailes. Depuis 1991, il a son propre groupe, Le Big Stars, comme pour s’assigner un objectif: devenir une grande star africaine.Aujourd’hui dans la quarantaine, Defao prend les choses comme elles viennent. Il sait que, pour lui, la roue tourne. maintenant en studio et en supplementaires en Afrique de l'est avec, Montana Kamenga, ce dernier revient à son guru artistique pour des nouvelles collaborations.
