NOVA - Chico Pinheiro & Anthony Wilson

About Me

One of the most celebrated artists in Brazilian music today, the young guitarist and composer Chico Pinheiro and one of the leading figures in modern jazz in US, the Los Angeles based, Grammy nominated guitarist and composer Anthony Wilson, join forces for a new project called "Nova" which explores both Brazilian bossa and American jazz through a unique lens. The new album brings a brand new perspective about blending both musical cultures, in a modern, contemporary way, featuring besides both explendid guitarists and composers, a top-notch list of Brazilian guests artists, such as Dori Caymmi, Ivan Lins, Cesar Camargo Mariano, and a wonderful supporting band that makes the album a rare treasure.

About Chico Pinheiro: One of the leading figures in modern Brazilian music, guitarist/composer/arranger Chico Pinheiro was born in Sao Paulo. Not only an exceptional guitarist with a wonderful sound and great fluidity, Chico Pinheiro is a unique composer of originality and maturity, qualities that come to the fore on his solo recordings. His first album "Meia Noite Meio Dia" (Sony Music/ 2003) was released in 2003 with great reviews at all the most important newspapers and magazines of Brazil and abroad, and was included in the “top 10 albums of the year” on both major newspapers of Brazil: “O Estado de Sao Paulo”, “A Folha de Sao Paulo” and “O Globo”. This well-received debut included performances from special guest vocalists Luciana Alves, Lenine, Ed Motta, Chico Cesar, and Maria Rita. Released in 2005, "Chico Pinheiro" (Biscoito Fino, 2005) enjoyed great critical and audience acclaim, being included again at the “top 10 albums of the year” from newspapers “O Estado”, “O Globo” and “Folha”. Only 33 years old, Chico has already performed and recorded as a player with artists like Victor Mendoza, Giovani Hidalgo, Fleurine, Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter, Mark Turner, Claudio Roditi, Eddie Gomez, Duduka da Fonseca, and the "cream" of Brazilian artists such as Rosa Passos, Luciana Souza, Chico Cesar, Dori and Danilo Caymmi, Joao Donato, Johny Alf, Cesar Camargo Mariano, being considered by the press and public in Brazil to be one of the most important artists emerged in the brazilian music scene, both as a player, arranger and composer.About Anthony Wilson: Grammy-nominated guitarist/composer/arranger Anthony Wilson is one of the leading jazz musicians of his generation. He has recorded six solo albums since 1997, the most recent of which, Power of Nine (2006, Groove Note) was included in The New Yorker's roundup of the top ten jazz recordings of the year. A sensitive and gifted accompanist as well as a formidable soloist, Wilson has been an indispensable member of Diana Krall's band since he joined her in 2001 for a series of performances at Paris's Olympia Theater that were collected on the Grammy-winning CD/DVD Live In Paris (Verve). Recent recordings and live includes appearances with Madeleine Peyroux, Al Jarreau, and Aaron Neville. Bennie Wallace, Larry Goldings, Joe Henry, Harold Land, Chris Botti, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and his father, legendary composer/arranger/bandleader Gerald Wilson, are just a few of the well-respected musicians with whom Anthony Wilson has performed with. Every year since 2000, Anthony Wilson’s talents as a guitarist/composer/arranger have landed him at the top levels of all three of those categories in Downbeat Magazine's International Critic's poll.
