Matt Borghi and Jason Sloan started SLO BOR Media in 2001 as a vehicle for their
releases, as well as others. SLO BOR Media is primarily a record label, but focuses on a variety of media and forms of music distribution. SLO BOR Media is also quite concerned with packaging, design, and the role of the artist working on the periphery of the mainstream. SLO BOR Media releases limited edition, hand-assembled, hand-numbered recordings. Once the stock of limited edition recordings are depleted SLO BOR Media has set up a variety of alternative routes for distributing the music, including places like iTunes ,
Emusic , MSN, Reals Rhapsody service, and a variety of other outlets via their distribution arrangement with
IODA SLO BOR Media also works as a design firm/consultancy. SLO BOR Media advises on printing/packaging options, as well as a digital forms of presentation, and distribution.
HISTORY and INTENTION - SLO BOR Media was born from a variety of ideas that
have to do with DIY (do-it-yourself) music and conceptual design. Labels like Dischord, and generally the grass roots approach to independent music influenced Matt. Matt loves the DIY approach, and believes that a job done best is a job done yourself. Jason was also influenced by these DIY approaches, but fused the elements of 4ADs design master Vaughn Oliver and Factory Records designer Peter Savilles work, with a little bit
of Robert Rauschenberg thrown in to make his own post-everything hybrid of the 20th century aesthetic, and conceptual design.
Needless to say, Jason and Matt were greatly influenced by music, and design, both their own and others. Matt and Jason began working jointly on a variety of music/sound collaborations, and then a series of live performances. Late in 2001 the idea of SLO BOR Media was proposed, and within a few months the first release was off the ground. Several releases followed, and the momentum of the label continued to propel them. Almost five years, and 14+ records later SLO BOR Media is growing strong, and beginning a move away from its genre roots. SLO BOR Media has a lot of releases planned for the years ahead, and were always anxious to hear new music, and review new design, so please get in touch if you think your work would fit with us.
