Clarabelle Eloise Gaellea was born in Marseille, France to a father and mother active in the Résistance. Her musical training started on the violin. She attended the Lycée Condorcet, where she studied literature and classical composition. After graduation, she moved to Paris to continue her studies at the Conservatoire de Paris, where she met de Saussure.
Jean-Francois de Saussure was born in Paris, France to Irish parents. Sent to an orphanage as a youth after his mother died when he was 4 and his father left to fight in the war, de Saussure started his musical career busking on the streets of Paris and Montmartre with a guitare. He began playing the guitare at age 12, and attended the Conservatoire de Paris studying music theory. He continued to busk on the side until he gained fame in Paris as a guitare virtuoso. He also worked as a pianist while at the conservatory and played the saxophone and accordion. He called his piano "My Other Love" and released an album solely playing piano of the same name. His early fame came playing with the Quintette du Hot Club de France.
