Did you know that the Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings all won their FIRST Championships in the SAME season??Detroit. 1935. And there began the most dominating sports perfomance in the history of America. In the sports season that lasted from 1935-1936, a frenzy of excitement descended on the city of Detroit and the State of Michigan. By September of this year-Joe Louis, a young professional boxer had just finished his mauling of the boxing worlds' finest boxers on his way to winning the Associated Press' award for "Most outstanding athlete of 1935," and uncrowned champion of the world.Only two weeks after Louis' battering of the former heavyweight champion Max Baer, the Detroit Tigers brought home the first World Series Title in their history winning 4 games to 2 over the Chicago Cubs.Less than two months later the Detroit Lions brought home their first title, after an astonishing comeback in the final weeks of the regular season and a 26-7 whipping of the defending champion New York Giants in the NFL Championship game.Four months later came the Red Wings' first Stanley Cup Championship. But not before they had beaten two of the most legendary teams in NHL history, and set a record for the longest playoff game ever played, a grueling 1-0 victory that lasted for almost nine periods-or three full games!Yes indeed, it was a truly sensational season for the teams of Detroit, and for the people as well. For in 1935 the city (along with the country) was mired in the horrendous economic conditions of the Great Depression. While everyone across the country was downtrodden and more than a little depressed, Detroit and the people of Michigan were celebrating a holiday called "Champions Day" and the new title of "Detroit, City of Champions."
