Free MySpace Layouts MySpace LayoutsThe idea for the Highway 41 Toy Convoy came up in 1997 when Hwy 41 ABATE formed. Katy & Virgil were two of the founding members along with Toby & Mary, John & Sandra, Bear & David Henley and Dale and Carol Lawrence, Andy, Sparky & Sandy. Virgil & Katy had gotten married at a toy run in Pensacola , so they definitely wanted to have something like that here. "Before I started riding, I remember standing on the corner watching bikers riding by to some event, and I couldn't go, because I didn't have a motorcycle. Christmas is for everybody, especially the kids, so let's invite everyone that wants to help a kid, regardless of what they ride or drive. All you have to do is bring a new unwrapped toy." So that's what we did. The first year 1997, the weather was freezing, 28 degrees! But that didn't stop over 200 people and 80 vehicles from joining the convoy. The following year, ABATE folded and Katy had a choice. Stop the convoy or try to do it without a club behind her. "If you quit now, Virgil told her, it will never be the same s it was before if you quit & try to start it back." so she kept going. I get by with a little help from my friends. Dale Lawrence aka Santa has led the convoy on his Harley for the past 12 years.Everyone is asked to bring new unwrapped toys and fly the American flag. Today the convoy lines up at Coffee Middle School Hwy 55 at I-24 exitt 111 in Manchester. The convoy draws people from all over the South, including Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky and last year a couple drove from Rock Hill South Carolina, to join the convoy. The youngest member of the convoy ws 2 weeks old and the oldest has been a 91 year old lady. She was walking around with the bikers and hot rods looking at all the rides. She told Katy, "I told my boys , one of them was going to bring me to this, and then she laughed, My oldest boys is 78 , the other is 75!" Everything that rolls is invited. Motorcycles, hot rods, family cars. 4 x 4s, trucks, jeeps, fire trucks, police cars, even Lowes' puts in a big truck. We roll 1 PM CST rain or shine! We have only had rain one year!
