About Me

Mindy Heinsohn hails from Easton, Maryland. She took up both the flute and dancing at the age of nine, but a foot injury led Ms. Heinsohn to begin her formal flute studies at the age of sixteen. Two years later, she made her solo debut with the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra, where she performed Mozart’s Concerto in G Major. Ms. Heinsohn attended the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where she studied with world-renowned flutist Marina Piccinini. In addition to her solo appearance with the Chesapeake Symphony, Ms. Heinsohn has appeared with the Sewanee Festival Orchestra. She has also appeared with the American Youth Philharmonic, under the baton of violinist and conductor Luis Haza. Ms. Heinsohn is former principal flutist of the American Youth Philharmonic, as well as principal second flute in the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. She has participated in master classes with Julius Baker, Ransom Wilson, Doriot Dwyer, Gary Shocker, and Thomas Robertello. She has attended festivals such as the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Sewanee Summer Music Festival, and Brevard Music Center. An avid lover of chamber music, Ms. Heinsohn performs frequently with her duo partner, pianist Roberto Vela. A performing duo since 2004, Heinsohn and Vela have appeared with the Baltimore Opera Company, St. Timothy’s Concert Series, and the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church Concert Series. The duo recently performed at Chamber Music International in the United Kingdom, where they premiered Gregor Riddell’s “A Versus D.”Ms. Heinsohn was a featured Young Artist in the Amadeus Concerts, Inc. in February 2007. She is actively involved in After Now and Sonar, two organizations focused on promoting new chamber music in the Baltimore-Washington area. Ms. Heinsohn has performed in the Peabody Conservatory’s Thursday Noon Recital Series. She also performed Qi, a work by former Peabody faculty member Chen Yi, in a ceremony launching the collaboration between the Peabody Conservatory and Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Singapore. As an advocate of twentieth century music, Ms. Heinsohn is currently expanding her knowledge of the repertoire for flute and percussion, and hopes to create a duo for this combination. She aspires to perform as a solo recitalist or a concerto soloist, as well as a chamber musician. She plans to teach privately, too. Ms. Heinsohn will continue her graduate flute studies at Yale University, and possibly gain further education thereafter.
