Gitta MacKay aka Jackie Robinson

About Me

"Fly, Robin, Fly"
Gitta McKay was born as Gitta Walther in the former German Democratic Republic but became a defector as she escaped to Western Germany at the age of 16, quickly establishing herself as a singer, signing with Philips in 1962 when she released two singles.
In the late 60s, she joined the Cornely Singers which evolved into the group Love Generation. At the same time, she quickly became a much-sought session singer in Munich. In 1974, she went into the studio with Lucy Neale, Betsy Allen and Roberta Kelly to do vocals on an album by producers Sylvester Levay and Michael Kunze.
Little was she to know that the resulting album, released under the name Silver Convention was to become a groundbreaking, million-selling disco album with the single "Fly, Robin, Fly" hitting the 1 spot on both sides of the Atlantic.
Due to Gitta's commitment in Love Generation, she was unable to become a member of Silver Convention, and a line-up of Linda G. Thompson, Ramona Wulf, and Jackie Carter was assembled to do TV performances. Jackie Carter was soon replaced by Penny McLean with whom Levay & Kunze recorded a solo album with Gitta, Lucy & Betsy on backing vocals. In fact, the outrageous scream on Penny's German 1 hit "Lady Bump" was done by Gitta!
"Moving Like A Superstar"
By the end of 1975, Gitta signed with Ariola Records and began recording a solo album with producers Fritz Muschler & Paul Birmingham, fusing pop, rock, disco and R&B. The first single release was "Moving Like A Superstar" - since it was an international release, she adapted the artist name Jackie Robinson. The single became a disco hit, even climbing the US R&B charts. The album "I'm Different" followed in Spring 1976 but went fairly unnoticed as did the second single "Pussyfooter".
While Gitta continued as a member of Love Generation, she was in huge demand as a backing singer for the likes of Amanda Lear, Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder, La Bionda and Joy Fleming. She released two more Jackie Robinson singles for Polydor in 1978 before founding the girl group The Hornettes in 1980 who enjoyed a successfull career as a recording and live act.
After more than 40 years in the business, Gitta is still an active artist, she released two solo albums in the late 90s and joined German rock/blues group Blackfingers in 2004.
