Hailing from Long Island, New York, Pembrook began their story in December of 2006 under the name Sleepwell. The band was composed of former members of local High School outfits What We’ve Become and Drown the Radio. Only two weeks after finally solidifying a line-up, they entered MixTake Studios (East Setauket, NY) with producer/songwriter Jim Robert to record what would become their “Midnight or Later†Demo. The four songs featured on the demo were written in about a week time frame, and the lack of familiarity both as a band and the songs themselves showed. Yet the five members of the then Sleepwell endured, leaving the studio with an optimistic perspective and a drive that kept their spirit undeterred in the months to come. The band began playing local shows soon after completing the demo at venues such as Traxx (Ronkonkoma, NY), The Vibe lounge (Rockville Centre, NY), the Crazy Donkey (Farmingdale, NY) and the Mulcahy’s Bars (Centereach, Hauppauge, NY) hoping to etch a place somewhere in Long Island’s diverse music scene.
In early 2008, Sleepwell changed their name to Pembrook, after the street on which the band practices. Pembrook entered Killingsworth Studios (Hicksville, NY) to work with producer and owner Anthony Santo on their upcoming EP, to be released later this year. Each member of Pemrbook has a very different musical taste, which they all work relentlessly hard at blending into emotional and raw songs. The Stony Brook press describes Pembrook as a "pepped-up marriage of the new school of pop punk and the harsh sounds of post hardcore". The band intertwines a combination of Pop, Indie, Punk and Hardcore influences into their music, often mixing easy hooks with breakdowns, distortion and overpowering group chants. Encouraging friends and fellow artists to take part in songs, the band thoroughly enjoys collaborating and experimenting on some tracks, and hopes to broaden its repertoire of instruments, voices and overall musical experimentation. On top of their new EP (yet to be named) the band plans on working on a series of demos featuring songs of many different genres and styles, both acoustic and electric. The band continues to trudge forth in hopes of writing songs that people will identify with and enjoy. They take honest criticism as a means to improve as songwriters and as musicians. For Pembrook, there is always work to be done and this is only the first step in what they hope will be a rewarding and fulfilling experience with music.
"They emit a vibrant energy - going as far as letting friends sing into the microphone during choruses - that some of the other bands lacked. It is this sense of not taking themselves too seriously and devoting more to crowd participation and having fun that gives them a strong edge against the many other performers."
