As an ELECTRIC BASS PLAYER,
Barbara was an original member of one of the first all womens groups, SISTER MOON. Sister Moon enjoyed success as a great NYC band, playing covers and original songs in local clubs, at a time when there were very few women musicians playing music in this genre. Afterwards, Barbara was an original member of the group Tequilla Sunrise. She joined the female group ISIS, which recorded a critically acclaimed record for United Artists entitled BREAKING THROUGH. In addition to the band, ISIS was joined in the studio by Laurie Frink and other top horn players on the NY scene. During this time Barbara also produced a 45 for Casse Culver, and played with other singer songwriters. Barbara worked in San Francisco playing with LINDA TILLERY, VICKIE RANDLE{of the Tonight Show}, THERESA TRULL, RHIANNON, and numerous other top players from the Bay Area. She recorded an album with Holly Near entitled "Imagine My Surprise". She also recorded with MALVINA REYNOLDS, and with MARGIE ADAM. After returning to NYC , Barbara became a member of the latin jazz group THE HARP BAND, which featured musicians from Laura Nyro's touring group. The Harp Band was a very popular band which played venues in NYC including Town Hall. The instumentation of the harp band included concert harp, timbales, congas, latin percussion, vibes, electric bass and various horns.
In NYC Barbara was a member of the KIT McCLURE JAZZ ENSEMBLE that toured Italy as part of the First International Womens Jazz Festival in Rome, Naples and Sicily.
While in NYC , she had the opportunity to work with ANNIE ROBOFF, the acclaimed Nashville Songwriter, and also worked with the legendary reggae drummer, WINSTON GRENNAN. She was also a member of the NYC JAZZMOBILE ORCHESTRA, which gave performances in schools.The orchestra featured some of the great latin musicians in Ny at the time including RAY ROMERO, on latin percussion. After meeting LAURA NYRO, Barbara went on to work closely with Laura, helping on the production and mixing of Laura's 1984 Columbia Disc "MOTHER'S SPIRITUAL". She worked with Laura from 1983-1987 as her close associate, helping in all aspects of Miss Nyro's music projects. With Laura, Barbara produced the recording of the song "Broken Rainbow", which was the title song of the film of the same name which won the academy award in 1985 for best documentary. Barbara also co-produced some music sessions using STEVE GADD, NATHAN EAST, LENNIE CASTRO and HUGH McCRACKEN. These sessions were used as references for some of the songs which appeared on Laura's live disc "LIVE AT THE BOTTOM LINE", released in 1989
In recent years as a bass player, she has continued to perform with many wonderful musicians, including THE ALLEN BROTHERS, PETER RUTH, UBAKA HILL, the childrens group GEMINI, BOBBY MACDOUGALL, and others. Barbara also became certified as a teacher in the national program MUSIC TOGETHER, which focuses on creating music play environments for pre schoolers. Barbara has also worked in musical theater, supporting childrens music productions. She is also currently teaching as well, both beginner piano and bass. She is a graduate of Stonybrook University, ans Manhattan School of Music.
Barbara is a diverse bassist equally adept in a variety of genres, including pop, rock, world, r+b, latin, reggae, etc...
