Carnell Murrell

Carnell Murrell first hit the faith-based music scene in Dallas, Texas, as a writer in 1991. Not long after, his group, The Carnell Murrell Singers performed in Steve Martin’s Leap of Faith. As one third of the Texas triumvirate of great gospel music writers, Murrell with Kirk Franklin and V. Michael McKay, exploded onto the gospel music scene. Together, they changed the sound of gospel music forever. Murrell was rewarded with nominations for both the Stellar and Soul Train Music Awards.
Murrell’s inspired musical style has evoked change in the hearts of his audience and is the cornerstone of his unique prophetic ministry. Though his story begins like a tragic tale, being plagued with polio as a child, gang-banging as a teen, enduring his parent’s tragic divorce, struggling with a drug addiction, living with empty relationships and all of the other ingredients needed for a great drama, Murrell understands that God had a purpose in every ounce of his past struggles. His hardships equipped him with the strength and vitality to move from a life full of despair into the open doors of God. Through a revival at Pastor Edward Calloway’s Lighthouse Church of God in Christ in Dallas, Texas, Murrell began on his destined path, not only with Christ, but with gospel music.
Murrell’s success in the last 15 years with the Dallas Fort Worth Mass Choir, Kirk Franklin, Wayman Tisdale, Jackie Clark Chisolm, Ricky Dillard, Myrna Summers, Men of Standard, Georgia Mass Choir, Kim Burrell’s hit song “Wash Me,” and three solo albums on Malaco/Savoy Records with hits like, “Wait I Say,” “I’m Pressing,” and “Taste and See,” have been just the beginning.
After signing to recently EMI/CMG merged, Lilly Mack Publishing, which was the largest and most successful independent publishing company in the gospel music arena with writers like Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr, Byron Cage, Hezekiah Walker, Myron Butler, Walter Hawkins and others, Murrell has continued writing on award-nominated projects such as Dorinda Clark Cole, Byron Cage and Dave Hollister’s hit-single, “What Do You Do.”
Murrell’s success on these projects has propelled him to become the first-ever featured writer in the new and innovative Lilly Mack Writers and Sing A Long Series from the most successful music executive duo in faith-based music history, Claude and Vicki Lataillade, founders of Gospo Centric Records and B-Rite Music. The series features writers and introduces brand new and well-known songs in an inclusive way, allowing everyone to Sing A Long. On the first two releases, Murrell debuts four new songs that will not only move you to your core, but give you room to worship and sing.
The debut single from the first Lilly Mack Writers and Sing A Long Series, Sunday Afternoon, is Murrell’s intimate song of submission to God, which was written soon after his beloved mother went home to heaven on December 3, 2006. The song is entitled, “You Are God.”
