THE BELLY DANCE was origionally a Pagan fertility rite and accompanied healing trance and magick rituals. To our ancient ancestors it possessed healing powers and was danced to worship the goddess; to celebrate nature,birth,marriage and death.
It was used to express natural phenomena, legends,stories and myths whhich often explained nature. Origionally danced by women for women, often in the role of of priestesses, demonstrating movements from the pelvic area and hips, celebrating their gift to give life.
Belly dancing isall about letting the body go beyond its physical boundries ,into a spiritual state to tune in and contact the divine energy of life force, performed for beliefs and healing on all levels: mind, body and spirit.
I have found that Belly dance can help awaken the chakras associated with the practice of Yoga. Yoga can be described as pure conciousess and resides at the base of the spine as a dormant snake.
The idea is to awaken this through the practice of yoga, meditation and personal development to achieve enlightenment and liberation in order to attain true will.
A chakra is a vortex wheel of energy that relates to different areas of the body, emotional,spiritual and phycological. There is evidence that the ideal music to awaken the sacral is traditional belly dance music., and many yoga teachers recommend belly dance music to activate the base, sacral chakras.
The interesting element of the snake in practice of belly dance and yoga actually links to another dicipline that i want to mention, as a form of Paganism, known as 'Shamanism'. in which important characteristics are animals that act as totems. These act as guides through the under worls, the Snake representing healing, initiation,trance and rebirth.
Interestingly it is believed that the early Egyptions priests were also influences by this practice because they often wore animal skins like a Shaman and their dance involved mostly animal movements, for example the Egyption Folk Stallion Dance, camel movements, and snake arms.
Therefore Belly Dance can be considered one of the oldest healing and universal dances in the world, now being revived with other ancient healing methods in what is considered today as 'New Age alternative healing'.
