The origins of Velvateen are debatable, but most would agree that they began as the jazz/alternative band, The Galleries. The Galleries would feature Bill Johnson, Eric Oglvie, and Josh McDowell as well as Nikki Conway on bass. The Galleries split and the band went on without Nikki to form Spencer Elden with Stephen Crabtree. Spencer Elden was a rockabilly/alternative band with potential, but Stephen proved to be difficult to work with so the band called it quits. After two incompatible guitarists, the guys sought the talents of former Couch Monkeys guitarist Will Taylor. The four piece was set and A.M. Astromut was changed to Velvateen. In the summer of 2000, "450mg of Velvateen" was released containing twelve songs. The songs were recorded at 6+1 Studios by Kevin Smith and were mastered by Steve Green at Island Sounds. The following summer, the band headed back into the studio to record their sophmore cult classic "Arcadia." This album was more mature than the first album and it was apparent that the band was growing. From 2001 to 2004, the band was writing some of their best material, but several botched recording sessions caused some tension. Will was asked to leave the band during this period as well. Enter Don Martin. Don came to Velvateen as a friend of Eric's and was a great lead guitar player. After a few months of aquainting Don to the band, we headed into 6+1 Studios and we decided to lay down the songs that we had been dying to record for some time. The bulk of the sessions were finished in June of 2005, but work is still being done. Unfortunately, Don moved away to Oregon, and Bill is in Minnesota so the band dissolved with work still left to do. With only final mixing and mastering left, the album should be out relatively soon. We'll keep you posted. Over the years Velvateen has played with Yellowcard, Homegrown, Allister, and The Spitvalves just to name a few.
