New York. When one thinks of this state certain ideas may run through their mind. Fashion, Times Square, Knicks, Yankees, Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem, Manhattan, Staten Island. But if you're a hip hop fiend one thing in particular stands out about NY, lyricism. The newest NY lyricist doesn't hail from one of the 5 boroughs instead he comes from Newburgh, one of the poorest and most violent cities in the state. Shadow, born De'Geon Briggs, is an 18 year old lyricist in training. Still mastering his flow and delivery, but already showing great promise with his similes, metaphors, and rhyme schemes, Shadow is a promising look into the future of hip-hop. Real hip-hop that is. In November, Shadow released the mixtape I'm Ready which was not heavily promoted, yet wuz well received by those who had the chance to hear it. Lately, Shadow has been studying classics such as Illmatic, '93 til Infinity, etc. As well as potential classics such as Mood Muzik 3 and Below the Heavens. His plans are to make a classic album himself. Although sometimes feeling underestimated and unappreciated, his new single No Cross, No Crown shows his maturity. "I finally understand that you not just gonna wake up on top of the world. You have to work your way to the top, and that's what i plan on doing." The album entitled "My Struggle" will b very much different from the often up beat "I'm Ready" mixtape. When asked to elaborate on why he chose "My Struggle" as the title Shadow explains, "When i was younger i appreciated Hitler's genius. In no way, shape, or form do i agree with his cruel ways, but he was a genius. While incarcerated Hitler wrote a book called Mein Kampf, which translates into My Struggle. Also, i've been raised in to different environments. On one hand my father is a pastor, on the other my mother isn't exactly "a Christian" to the same capacity. So i struggle in between the two."
