The issue of how can one overcome the tendency of institutionalized music education towards uniformity, repeatability, standardization and measurability cannot be easily resolved. 6daEXIt-ensemble for improvised music is a music improvisation ensemble that lives on the border between institutionalized musical practice and performance and rehearsal modes that derive from the 'tradition' of informal music collectives. Its members are university music students, or recent graduates. A strong educational component permeates their work, notably because ideas tested there interact with the modules taught by their leader in the Music Department of a leading Greek University, which regularly hosts many of the groups' performances. Their initial intention was to do something beyond the confines of a university module, but gradually their meeting took a life of their own. Their prime focus is the pursuit of free improvisation. At earlier stages of their development, they used to their members' ideas as a base for setting up semi-improvised performances, as well as on pieces made by experimental composers (by, for example, Cage or Stockhausen, or, more recent pieces by Kunsu Shim, Gerhard Staebler and Carl Bergstrom-Nielsen). Their performances incorporate strong theatrical elements, and subvert the stage/audience divide so that the musicians may perform among those who attend their crowded concerts – this collective never loses its sense of humour. In their more recent work, they focus exclusively on free improvisation, have abandoned the use of large (however open) structural plans, and collaborate with painters and dancers without any concrete aim.
