THE STORY BEHIND THE FORMATION OF THE JACKSON-AVERY FOUNDATION
On July 16, 2005 my heart was broken as a dear friend and I watched the breaking news come over the TV of a dear man and friend killed by an illegal immigrant with many prior convictions of DWI. As I learned more about this man from the friends and family that loved him so, I discovered he had left behind not only a wonderful and lovely woman, but also two amazing children who will now never be able to share with their father all the wonderful memories ahead. This man is Scott Gardner, and his seriously injured and hospitalized wife, is Tina.
I chose to start an organization whose purpose is to allow Scott's children, Jackson and Avery Gardner, the opportunity to chase any dream imaginable... To help ease the enormous financial burden on the family due to the loss of their father, and the never-ending battle of recovery for their mother. I wanted to help give back to the Gardner family something I know now that I have always taken for granted: The opportunity to grow, be happy, and experience life with both eyes wide open! To have the love of a supporting family and the ability to share all the joys and sorrows life throws your way... To learn and explore the ever changing world we call life.
I also learned that this senseless tragedy could have been prevented if our Legal and Immigration Systems would have made a greater effort to imprison or effectively deport an illegal alien convicted of DWI 5 times prior. I am outraged about a government who taxes us for border control, and then even in this post 9/11 world, with all the resources of "Homeland Security", does nothing to secure it. I have heard so much of families whose lives are forever changed all because we didn't stop the problem where it started.
I know this will be a long and weary battle, but I feel strongly that the more people that are made aware of this growing issue, and the better educated we all are, the more successful we will be to take a stand.
With your help, I feel confident that the Jackson-Avery Foundation will be a success, striving to ensure the future of not only the surviving Gardner Family, but our children as well. We shall accomplish that by achieving our goal of preventing such tragedies from ever occurring again.
Sincerely,
Virginia D. Faircloth
