The singer and improviser Christine Clément (Windsleepers, To Catch a Crab…) formed this quartet in 2003 in Strasbourg; around her, three musicians, Christophe Imbs on piano (Scrub Trio, Praxis…), with whom she develops a musical complicity for several years, Francesco Rees on drums (Virage, Strasax) and Vincent Posty on bass (Zakarya, Ivrim, Ovale), three key musicians of the post-jazz scene of the East of France.
Going from breath to shout, exploiting with ease a wide range of sounds, the voice of the singer blends with the other instruments, creating a singular musical dialogue which draws its inspiration from jazz, as well as pop, ethnic and contemporary music.
The compositions blend repetitive rhythmic figures with fine harmonic developments, opening a wide way for improvisation. The musicians develop games of textures, mixing and superimposing sounds and voices.
Combining energies stemming from Rock and Jazz, the rhythmic stream, imperceptibly mobile, creates a dense and obsessing climate. Here the musicians build a hypnotic and sensitive universe from which emerge the words of the 19th century american poetress Emily Dickinson; those words indeed, revealed in their deepest and meaningfull strengh by the voice of Christine Clément.
La vocaliste et improvisatrice Christine Clément forme ce quartet en 2003 à Strasbourg, s’entourant de Christophe Imbs au piano, avec qui elle développe une complicité musicale depuis de nombreuses années, Francesco Rees à la batterie (Virage, Strasax…) et Vincent Posty à la basse électrique (Zakarya, Ivrim, Ovale…), trois musiciens phares de la scène post-jazz du grand est de la France.
Passant du souffle au cri, exploitant avec aisance une large palette de timbres, la voix de la chanteuse se fond aux autres instruments, dialoguant dans une musique singulière qui puise son inspiration aussi bien dans le jazz, la pop, les musiques ethniques et contemporaines.
Les compositions associent l’utilisation de riffs et ostinatos rythmiques à de subtils développements harmoniques, et laissent une large place aux espaces d’improvisation dans lesquels s’élaborent des jeux de textures, associations de timbres, superpositions et enchevêtrements de voix.
Réunissant des énergies issues du rock et du jazz, le flux rythmique, imperceptiblement mobile, crée un climat dense et obsédant.
Ainsi se crée un univers hypnotique et sensible, d’où émergent les mots d’Emily Dickinson, poétesse américaine du 19ème siècle dont Christine Clément révèle toute la fragilité et la force expressive.
