Czech Guitar Trio to visit Zambia
By Wana Kalala
A GROUP of professional guitarists from the Czech Republic is next week expected to arrive in Zambia for a series of performances.
The guitar trio comprising Miroslav Nosek, Jachym Stetka and Michal Sinka is scheduled to arrive on Thursday and will hold its first performance at the Alliance Francaise in Lusaka the same evening.
The trio, which has been specially formed for the trip to Zambia, will also perform at Livingstone's River Club next Friday and at the Royal Golf Club on Saturday.
Radu Tesaro Kirby who is organising the Trio's tour, said the three musicians have been working very hard in preparing for their first-ever performance in Africa. " They have performed in the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Poland, Germany and Belgium. They are all very talented professional musicians playing jazz, classical, Spanish and Latin music. One of them will also be drumming,' she said.
The Trio will hold an evening jam session at Rhapsody's restaurant in Lusaka on August 12, and conclude their tour with a performance at the Hotel Intercontinental the following day.
Radu said the Trio was looking forward to their performances and giving people in Zambia a new cultural experience. "They are looking forward to meeting their audiences and giving performances here. They want to feel the atmosphere and experience a different part of the world," she said.
Nosek is a graduate of the Jaroslav Jezek Conservatory where he studied classical guitar in the class of Professor Milan Tesar. The twenty-nine-year old has played with different classical and jazz ensembles.
Sinka, 21, began his classical music studies at the age of six, and has performed as a duo with Nosek at many concerts including the Prague Musical Spring. He is currently still studying at the Jaroslav Jezek Conservatory.
Stetka, 25, a graduate of the same institution, teaches guitar at music school.
Radu said the Trio's performances in Europe have been received favourably and expressed confidence that audiences in Zambia will also enjoy its selection of jazz and classical music.
"These musicians are very talented, and had to pass through very tough talent exams to graduate. They have worked very hard before this trip, put together a great repertoire as a trio and we can just look forward to what we will hear," said Radu.

Czech trio charms audiences
By Wana Kalala
SCORES of Lusaka residents packed the Alliance Francaise last Thursday to watch a sublime performance by a trio of guitarists from the Czech Republic.
Specially formed for their trip to Zambia, the Guitar Trio comprising Miroslav Nosek, Jachym Stetka and Michal Sinka, gave a professional and skillful rendition of classical, jazz, Irish and traditional Slovak music that captivated a near sold-out audience.
The evening's repertoire, a complete programme of acoustic guitar performance and occasional drumming by Nosek, consisted of arrangements including Eugenie, Scarlatti's Sonata and Mrs McDermott by Hromek. Other pieces on the programme were Towner's Anthem, Nosek's arrangement of Senor Mouse and Morel's Danza Brasilera.
The three musicians clearly were in a class of their own as they showed their mastery of their guitars through the evening's selection, displaying splendidly ornate styles on each piece.
Nosek and Stetka are both graduates of the Jaroslav Jezek Conservatory in Prague, while Sinka is still studying at the same institute. All three musicians were taught by composer and arranger Professor Milan Tesar, whose daughter Radu Tesaro-Kirby organised the Trio's trip to Zambia.
So impressed was the audience at Alliance Francaise that the Trio graciously responded to three encores, one that included Henry Mancini's Pink Panther Theme.
Sinka thanked the organisers for facilitating the Trio's trip to Zambia, which was its first to Africa.
Lusaka Music Society committee member Simon Kalommo described the Trio as amazing. "There was a bit of classical music, jazz, contemporary. That to me is what makes a good musician; not (only) being able to play one style of music, but to embrace all styles," he said.
The Trio also performed in Livingstone over the weekend, and were scheduled to conduct a jam session at Rhapsody's at the Arcades shopping complex in Lusaka. A final performance was scheduled for the Intercontinental Hotel on Wednesday.
