Scott Kent, also known as rapper Wolverine, adopted the persona of the famous Marvel comic creation, full of rage and the unbreakable metal adamantium, long before Hugh Jackman brought the character to movie screens. And while Jackman honed his craft at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Kent also spent years honing his in Perth, except he did it in cyphers, studios and live shows around the city. With the nationwide release of his debut solo album The Wait is Over players nationwide are soon going to need adamantium speakers.
Any notions that Wolverine is just another rapper who has thrown together an album can be quickly discarded; his debut is being distributed through Australia’s premier hip hop label Obese records, and features some of Perth’s biggest names including Optamus and Dazastah (of Downsyde), Clandestien and Hunter. He has also performed at some of Perth’s premier live venues, and his intense live show has seen him share the stage with acts including Blackalicious, Foreign Legion, Art of War, Downsyde, Hospice Crew, Bias B, Trials (of Funkoars) and SBX.
The December WA release of his debut solo album concluded a productive 2006 for Wolverine, in which he also released two mixtapes as well as a full length album with his group Figures of Speech, Roll of the Dice. The title The Wait is Over is appropriate in many ways. It is an album four years in the making, after label politics and computer troubles stalled its release. It is also an album that is 13 years coming; it was in 1994 that Wolverine first picked up the microphone, inspired by the likes of NWA, Geto Boys and Public Enemy. Finally, and perhaps most significantly, it details 26 years worth of Wolverine’s experiences and memories.
In his four years working on the album Wolverine established himself as a well respected member of the Perth hip hop scene, and this can be seen in the caliber of his collaborations including The Funky Two with Dazastah, Get Drunk with Us featuring Hunter and Final Straw with Clandestien. His thirteen years experience as an MC are also evidenced on The Wait is Over, as he tears into other rappers on Holdin’ Back with Optamus and on the appropriately hard hitting Knockin’ Cunts Out. Finally, Wolverine’s 26 years of real life experience inform songs like The Accident, a haunting recollection of a near fatal car crash, the tales of crime on 4 in the Morning, and his dedication to his hometown End of the Earth, which received Triple J airplay.
WA producers Bios and Rob Shaker provide the majority of the production, along with contributions from Dazastah on the aforementioned Holdin’ Back and Squared on the Figures of Speech effort Enough is Enough. Wolverine meanwhile isn’t slowing down; his new mixtape “The Maestro Mixtape”will be out mid 2008 and the follow up album “The Maestro” in late 2008, and he also has plans for a mid year interstate tour. It’s been a long wait, but Wolverine is about to be unleashed on Australian hip hop.
