About Me
Raised in Springfield, Massachusetts' privileged middle class suburbs, Platinum Pete likes it when words rhyme. He sites Dr. Suess as his main influence as an MC, claiming that, "His writtens are dope and the only written rhymes I've ever had respect for". Platinum was often scolded as a child for refusing to speak unless rhyming. "When I was seven all I wanted to do was have sex and rhyme words together, I new that some day, that's what I would do, but I didn't realize then that I was going to have to invent Hip Hop first", Platinum Pete says of when he was a child.Platinum has been active in the NYC Hip Hop underground scene since his 1984 migration to Brooklyn when he took to the streets and invented "popping and locking". He was discovered by Coby-Won early on and this lead to Pete's 1987 demo release "Get Off My Nutz, No, Wait,.. Get Back On 'Em" which was highly praised by critics and fans worldwide, and though banned in most areas, it brought Platinum to the attention of many record labels. One of those labels, a fledgling company at the time called Swindle Entertainment, decided to take a risk with this kid, and boy are they glad they did.The bottom line - this kid can curse! Never before has a blaspheming misogynist hit the airwaves with such raw unadulterated anger. He claims that he has never written a rhyme and is the self proclaimed 'King of Freestyle'. "When I was helping hip hop get on it's feet in the early eighties, we never wrote shit down, we just said shit, that' s how we invented freestyling. It was the sellouts like Flash and Herc that starting writing shit down and repeating it and essentially turning their backs on the streets in favor of being commercial" says Platinum of the early days of Hip Hop.One reporter once asked him, "Why do you rap?" his answer, "I don't rap, the mic is a pussy and I just fuck it (un-lubricated)". That same reporter continued by asking him, "Do you feel that not writing your lyrics down has inhibited you in any way over the years as a lyricist?" Again his answer, "Fuck a lyricist! All they do is try to be witty and rhyme shit together, but how witty is it if you already wrote it like a month ago? I say shit that don't make sense, sometimes it does, but most of the time it don't, and I think that is kind of witty in it's own way. So in a way I'm the nicest lyricist that ever lived, sort of."Platinum's unpolished lyrics and love of fornication is the perfect compliment to producer Coby-Won's (Ko-Bee Wan) fresh off the boat beats. The DC to NYC to Tokyo back to NYC migration has given an internationality to the raw tracks that Coby produces minus a computer (that's right all of his tracks are produced using only a piece of cardboard, some copper wire, a modified Atari 2600 system, and a minidisc player). Platinum Pete's debut is unlike anything ever recorded since Thomas Edison's first recording studio. Now Edison smiles down from heaven at Platinum and gives a wink of approval, his personal favorite Browntown. If you like pornography, curse words, and general poor taste, Platinum Pete's 'These Are Sex Rhymes' is the album for you, fuck it! It's the album of the century.
