Octavio Santos a.k.a. DJ ONCS6 has been known to have an eclectic palette of genres armed at his disposal. Taking influences from various tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson ( host of BBC Radio 1's critically acclaimed "Worldwide" ) and Benji B ( host of BBC 1Xtra's "Deviation" ) among others, DJ ONCS6 has established himself as a tastemaker in the local Mississauga scene and has even caught the attention of some parts of the world. He has garnered many appreciative listeners who dig what he digs on his radio show called "The Vibrasonic Experiment" which airs Fridays 5-7 PM EST. Like scientists of sound, he analytically puts it down...dedicated in bringing you soundscapes belonging to jazz, electronica, R&B, hip hop, old school funk just to name a few. DJ ONCS6 searches for that perfect sound...that perfect beat constantly, paying close attention to every bass line, every syncopated drum kick, every vocal...every sound that comes out of your speakers. The tunes are ear picked to ensure your listening pleasure, two hours every week. If you're around your computer around those two hours, maybe you'd fancy a listen? His diverse knowledge of music has turned many heads and have been sought after for influences and inspiration. His knowledge of music is so vast that it surprises many. He has gained awards and nominations for his exceptional experimentation on the airwaves. The main purpose of "The Vibrasonic Experiment" to is expose talent that is unheard of within mainstream culture. Since its inception in 2003, DJ ONCS6 has continued to strive in finding any talent that he deems the public should take note of."There is so much untapped talent out there and it disappoints me that no one is listening. Well, it's not really that they're not listening...it's more like there's no means of getting that talent heard. It's my duty to get these sounds out and make people aware. I can't keep all this music to myself...I gotta share it, nahmean?"With a quick ear, DJ ONCS6 constantly searches for talent...and he does so with great success, both locally and worldwide. Among the discoveries, they include The Quartertones , God Made Me Funky , Kobayashi and Joanna Borromeo . DJ ONCS6 invites artists to participate in live in sessions in which they perform music live to air with no prerecorded stuff. It's all concocted right then and there...some are straight improvised. It's enough to capture the essence of what these artists are capable of...honest and true. He's not just a DJ...he does a lot of other things, musically speaking. He chuckles when he says, "There are traces of blood in his music stream..." See what DJ ONCS6 is all about . If it's a good listen...it'll be played. -=- Q & A for the DJ...particularly DJ ONCS6
Q: Why did you want to become a DJ?
A: I'm well rounded in music...I play trumpet/drums and I've played some other instruments for a short time, I've played in ensembles and concert bands, and I listen to plenty of music. I always prescribe a good dose of music for me to vibe on everyday. The next step was to become a DJ and play around with other people's work and show people how much music they're missing out on. I made plenty of demos that I gave away using sub-par equipment and programming...now I have a better software to run out the beats.Q: You have an eclectic palette of genres that you listen to. Was there a genre that sparked your love for music? From that, how did everything progress to the genres that you enjoy now?
A: My father and I listened to classical and jazz. Jazz was my sweet tooth (it still is). Earl Klugh, George Benson and David Sanborn were the artists that I listened to the most. I started expanding into upbeat tunes in jazz and acid jazz, Incognito being the hottest one in my ears. I discovered a CD of theirs in my dad's collection that he hardly listened to. I swiped the "Positivity" album from him and I was immediately drawn to their fresh sound. Later on I scoped out all of their other albums including their "Remixed" and "Future Remixed". Those albums are great. These 2 gems paved the way for dance and house in my ears because I started listening to those remix artists. Hip hop was introduced to me through a friend who was a beatboxing machine. He hooked me up with albums from The Roots, Common, Talib Kweli, and Brassmunk. Funk and disco came from the dance influences. I love Earth, Wind & Fire and anything that has a popping bassline. R&ampB came through listening to the radio. Brian McKnight was my main R&ampB artist. Most of Boyz II Men's albums were hooked up by DJ Mellow-D and I hooked her up with most of Brian's albums. I'm cool with rock because my father listened to that too. He's a heavy Eric Carmen fan. I'll dig rock if it has kickin' guitar riffs and solos. The addition of gospel to my repetoire is due to Tye Tribbett & his choir G.A. (Greater Anointed). His music blew my mind! So much energy in his music. I started listen to DJ Fitz's show "Vibrations" and he totally converted me to nu gospel music. Now I listen to the likes of Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans and more. My progression to different genres of music have been broadened in beginning of the 2003 year. Thanks to Gilles Peterson and his worldwide radio sessions, I've expanded my tastes to upcoming talents like Bugz In The Attic, Lewis Taylor, Dizzee Rascal and Ty. Gilles also brought to my attention the artists back in the day such as Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, Herbie Hancock and Gene Harris. My high school music teacher Mrs. Leech commented on my tastes in music by saying, "You are born in the wrong era" (acknowledging my taste with positivity). *Laughs* How true it is...I'm really lucky to be able to enjoy all of this music. I'm also able to share it with people that I know and people that I don't know via radio. Gilles looks for that perfect beat...that perfect sound...I'm doing the same thing everyday. I'm appreciating the music that I didn't look at back then...I'd see their music videos on TV, but I just flipped the channel. I'm no longer like that anymore.Q: What do you do when you're away from radio DJing?
A: Sleeping and eating. *Laughs* That and on the computer chatting away on MSN and surfing on the net. Sometimes I play around with my mix program trying to figure out what sounds good together in terms of beatmatching. When I have something on my chest I write rhymes on a piece of paper...any piece of paper that I find and then I record and verbalize it all on the mic with a beat in the background. Sometimes I'll play around with my trumpet, playing to existing music or making new stuff. I'll be in my mini-studio most of the time...if the vibe is right, then I'll bang out something. Most of the time I'll just be playin' around with the keys, tryin' to figure out somethin'. I love to network with other artists and make ends meet. I work out in my basement, trying to keep a strict regiment. TV, especially The Simpsons keeps me occupied. When the weather is great, I play basketball and tennis. Chillin' with friends is always good, especially when we're all cracking jokes. You can call me a mall rat as well. I splurge (as in SPLURGE) on plenty of things...CD's, shoes, 59FIFTY caps, food...and the list goes on... Got Facebook? Join "The Vibrasonic Experiment: Global Listener's Base"
