About Me
A Des Moines native, versatile trumpeter Dave Rezek holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree with a jazz emphasis from the University of Northern Iowa , where he studied with Randy Grabowski and was a soloist on the inaugural recording of UNI’s award-winning Jazz Band One , under the direction of Bob Washut ; and a Master of Music degree in jazz trumpet performance from New England Conservatory , where he had highlight performances with guest composers Maria Schneider and Gunther Schuller, studied with John McNeil , Danilo Perez and Bob Brookmeyer , and his small groups were coached by Michael Cain , Danilo Perez and George Garzone . Since 1989, he has been a music educator, performed, and/or taught privately in Iowa, Missouri, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. While in Branson, Missouri, he was a trumpeter/arranger for the Shoji Tabuchi Show for 4 years, eventually leaving the show to be both the 6th Grade Beginning Band Teacher and the Assistant Director of Bands at Branson High School for one year. While in Boston, besides finally experiencing the exhilaration of being an "in-town" Red Sox fan, he had been a member of the eclectic, storytelling jazz big band Indigo Inventions , as well as the NEC Honors Jazz Quintet and the NEC Jazz Composers' Workshop Orchestra , under the direction of Bob Brookmeyer, and he also made guest appearances with the Big & Phat Jazz Orchestra , the Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra (Ayn's a Brookmeyer protégé) and the Pablo Ablanedo Octet . While in New York, he had been a member of the lush, intense, and slightly insane big band Secret Society (led by Brookmeyer protégé Darcy Argue, and which features trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and husband/drummer John Wikan , among other top NY musicians) and had subbed with numerous other original and innovative big bands including Sound Assembly (co-directed by UNI alumn and composer/trombonist JC Sanford and composer/saxophonist David Schumacher, also both Brookmeyer protégés, and whose heartbeat is supplied by percussionist/composer John Hollenbeck ), the Jamie Begian Big Band , Pulse , the Christian Pincock Big Band (Christian also came out of the Brookmeyer camp...OK, what the hell does Bob feed these people?!), and the BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra . Also a frequent sub on Broadway, Dave had performed with the cast of Jersey Boys (including an onstage performance for the 2006 Tony Awards ), Threepenny Opera, Beauty and the Beast, and Gypsy, among others. In July 2007, Dave, his wife, and their toddler son decided to move closer to family, settling back into the Des Moines area, where he has been a private teacher, clinician, adjudicator, guest soloist, member of the Max Wellman Quintet , and has also been performing with the Des Moines Big Band , Roxi Copland , Orquesta Alto Maiz (aka The Salsa Band) , Sam Salomone , and Dave Altemeier . He's in the process of putting together his own creative groups and is excited to be an original board member of the new Synergy Jazz Foundation. Stay tuned in 2009 for more on these latest pieces of the puzzle!I edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V4.4 (www.strikefile.com/myspace)
