The Oran Mor Pipe Band

About Me

Late in 1992, Oran Mor organized under the direction of Pipe Major Jim Clough, Lead Drummer Bill MacNeill, and instructor Donald F. Lindsay. Formed as a vehicle for talented players from local bands to strive for a higher musical standard, the band registered in Grade III and centered its activities around Utica and Syracuse, New York. As the band’s membership and skill level grew, Oran Mor quickly climbed to the top of its grade, being named Season Grade III Champions in 1994 and 1996. Following the band’s elevation to Grade II for the 1997 season, the geographic base shifted toward Albany and New York’s Capital Region, where Oran Mor has become strongly rooted.Under the long-time direction of current P/M Donald Lindsay, the band has developed an acclaimed ability to produce great music in the band setting. It has also built a reputation for launching solo players—and more recently, bandsmen—into elite competition. Similarly, the drum corps has continually improved through its formative years with L/D Bill MacNeill (’92-’95), and subsequent drive into Grade II under L/D Norman McLeod (’95-’99). Current L/D Eric MacNeill (’99-present) continues to set high goals for the corps, routinely consulting with the band’s instructor and mentor, J. Reid Maxwell (L/D Simon Fraser University Pipe Band). Oran Mor’s original lead drummer, Bill MacNeill, remains a devoted and steady presence in the drum corps, now led by his son.Today, Oran Mor boasts a roster of nearly 30 pipers and drummers, an entirely volunteer support staff, and guidance from international giants of the pipe band world. Focused on the future and constantly striving to reach new goals, Oran Mor’s reputation for musical excellence is matched by its reputation for the mentorship of aspiring musicians. The majority of Oran Mor’s members instruct multiple solo students and at least one full band.- From "History", oranmor.org
