I first picked up the saxophone at the end of grade 3, after graduating from plastic flutophone to the recorder. I suspect that my inspiration to play sax came from exposure to cheesy 80s sax solos on commercial radio, or from Wilbur Wilde on Hey Hey It's Saturday.
Over the years since, I have played in various bands with muso friends from Melbourne and more recently, Sydney. I have also discovered that saxophones weren't just invented to play cheese-infused pop solos, but have a richer presence in jazz, blues and funk. Bands I've enjoyed jamming with have included Technicians in Porn, Glass Museum, The Method, Live@Subs , The Guests, Yesterday's Jam , and I'm now jamming with Bag of Tricks , Fonque Nouveau , Lounge Act , and The John Hardaker Direction .
I started out on alto, but in 2004 when I purchased what I thought was a vintage alto sax on ebay, it turned out to be a tenor. So I now play a 1950s Dolnet tenor sax.
