Early in April, a young couple in Cairns were charged under the anti-abortion provisions in the QLD criminal code. A 19 year old woman faces seven years imprisonment for allegedly terminating a pregnancy while her 21 year old partner faces three years imprisonment for providing the abortion drug allegedly used for the termination. It is the first time for at least 50 years that a woman has been charged in Australia for having an abortion.
We cannot allow this injustice to occur - it’s time for us to stand up and defend the rights that so many before us have fought so hard for and which are now under attack by those who would have us go back to the dark ages of backyard abortions.
These charges are brought under laws that should not even exist. Abortion should not be a crime.It is high time for QLD to follow the lead of the ACT and Victoria where abortion has been decriminalised.
