About Me

I am a self-taught musician who got his first string instrument (banjo) at the age of 6 years old. I met “The Red Wigglers” at Union Grove Fiddler’s Convention in 1974 and we been friends ever since. Our musical backgrounds are varied and diverse, and so are the styles of music we’ve played over the years.----- I did a brief stint as a mandolin player for a local bluegrass group known as “Foxfire.” In the early 80s I joined some Top-40 Country road bands and toured the west and mid-west for 5 years living out of a suitcase playing mostly electric guitar in bands by the name of “Southwind,” ”The Claytons,” “The Terry Clevinger Band” and “Carolina”. In the later part of the 80s I settled down in the Phoenix Arizona area for 4 years and began writing more seriously. I moved back to NC, married, settled down and gained several wonderful grandchildren. I played banjo for a while with “Wood & Steel” and with “Robert Tilley’s Hard Times Band.” Now I only perform a few times a year with “The Red Wigglers.” Our style of music is mostly acoustic or a mixture close to it, but we have used drums and electric instruments as well depending on our mood. Our background comes from bluegrass, folk, country, rock & beach music. We are putting the finishing touches on a new CD with all original songs written by Russ, Mark or myself. Go to www.myspace.com/russashburn to inquire about it. I have just finished a fiction novel called “Charleston Fuller” I hope to make available soon about a haunted theater and mansion. ************************************************************ **** Go to: http://www.russashburn.com/ Click on: “Surry County Jail Break” - Playing banjo and bass fiddle with the Red Wigglers.
