Leicester Falcons Match Report 13/04/08 VS Shropshire Revolution.

Shropshire Revolution began their 2008 campaign on Sunday with a well-earned 21-12 victory win against league newcomers Leicester Falcons. In a match played in atrocious conditions and with the pitch resembling a quagmire both sides struggled to move the ball. Shropshire scored first on their second drive of the day as diminutive running back Andy Calvert broke several tackles as he galloped 39 yards for a touchdown. Andy Plant added the point after to take Revolution 7-0 ahead. Any thoughts that the league new boys would be overrun quickly proved groundless as Leicester mounted a drive culminating in a three-yard touchdown pass to Dave “Pirate” Thornbur. Shropshire were further rocked in the second quarter when the Falcons scored on a 45 yard touchdown run from 2007 MVP Rich Davis to take the lead 12-7. Shropshire were able to restore their lead with the first of new signing Jack Garnsey’s two touchdown passes, this one a ten yard toss from quarterback Warren Thomas. Plant again added the extra point, giving Revolution a narrow 14-12 lead going into the break. In the second half both team’s defenses were on top with neither side able to move the ball effectively and, with the pitch now looking like the mud of the Somme, Shropshire were increasingly nervous knowing one score would win the match. In the forth quarter however, with good field position thanks to excellent work by their defense, they were able to secure the win with the second of Garnsey’s touchdowns – this a 25 yard pass from Rob McLean. In addition to Garnsey and Calvert, the other star for Shropshire was tough as teak defender Lee Tretheway who had a standout day with 14 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. This performance earned him a nomination for BAFL Player of the Week.

MVPs were, (Offense) WR Chris Rodrigo - (Defense) LB Phil Stansfield

Leicester Falcons Match Report 20/04/08 VS Lincolnshire Bombers.

The Leicester Falcons dug deep and showed true heart to record their first win in BAFL Division 2 against the Lincolnshire Bombers. Leicester’s defence took the field first and dominated, forcing a turnover on downs after a fumbled punt and setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon. With a short field rookie running back Ben Longland (27 carries for 173 yards, 2 touchdowns for the day) powered over and opened their account. Even after another Falcons touchdown, a 11 yard reception from Chris Rodrigo, Lincolnshire were not ready to lie down and gained good yardage through the air, pulling back to within a score with some determined play and a two point conversion. Both offences had it tough as it became a defensive trench war of hard hits and turnovers. With both defences on top it came down to special teams to turn the tide. An 82 yard kick-off return by Falcons wide receiver Chris Rodrigo (4 returns for 151 yards, 2 touchdowns for the day) just after half-time set a fire under the offence and they stepped up their game, battling through injuries to keep plugging away. Even a well returned interception by the Bombers for a touchdown couldn’t dampen their spirits as they continued to fight against a strong opponent right until the final whistle, finishing up as 25 - 16 winners.

MVPs were, (Offense) Ben Longland - (Defense) Andy Hill
