Keine Ahnung formed at the beginning of the eighties, moved by common roots and a common interest in the exciting new musical developments. Their controversial name (“Don’t know†or “Haven’t got a clue†in German language) caused quite a confusion and mistake during the whole of their existence. In 1983 they recorded their first self-titled album in two days’ time and in an edition of 1000 copies which were sold very quickly. This record obtained recognition beyond the German borders and attracted the attention of the British label East West Trading Company, sublabel of Cherry Red Records that re-issued their song “Plastik†as a 12 inch in a remixed English and German version.A second Album, “Falsche Zeit Falscher Ort†was recorded in 1985 and remained unreleased due to beginning musical discordances. In the mid-eighties, the band split for some time, due to its members moving to different cities, but soon reappeared with new members.A third Album, "Europa" was recorded in 1988. The production was interrupted just before the recording of the vocals. Some instrumental pre-mixes on cassette exist.Keine Ahnung Studio and Live were completely different. Studio time was expensive in these days, so the music was minimal electronic pop. The live sound was more complex, guitars, metal percussion and tapes were used. The beats and basslines came from the now classic Roland 606/303 duo (triggering a KORG MS-20 for the bassdrum). For each concert a new concept was created, and hardly any song was ever played twice. The CD “Rekonstruktion†(1995) contains a Mix of the first Album, adding some new songs and new versions. In 2003, "Plastik" was contained in a probably illegal way in the CD compilation "New Deutsch". Presently, Keine Ahnung is existing essentially as a virtual band with a common past.
