Chicago Youth Skateboard Project

Mission Statement:
The Chicago Youth Skateboard Project (CYSP) is a non-profit group that supports and empowers inner city communities through skateboarding.
Principles Statement:
Chicago Youth Skateboarding Project will:
1) operate as a Nonprofit organization
2) advocate for civic improvements for inner city family access to skateboarding.
3) build children's self-esteem through skateboarding
Our Goal:
CYSP's goal has set its eyes realistically to provide 20 skateboards(new and used) to girls and boys in need (ages 9-15) who are enthusiastic about trying something new and fun. Our hope is a kid who is skating is not getting into other trouble. The CYSP is a non for profit charity that will make lasting improvements in Chicago with an emphasis on supporting and empowering low-income families through skateboarding advocacy. By donating skateboards to kids in need we hope to create an inexpensive and esteem building activity for youth to participate in. We are accepting donations and funds that will produce tangible, ongoing, positive results in our city.
Skateboarding Workshops are being developed with local skateboarders and artists helping kids learn to ride, perform tricks, and learn about skateboarding culture.

HOW OUR PROJECT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Skateboards and Health:
Skateboarding continues to be one of the fastest growing sports in America. Skateboarders represent a vital part of the urban community with national health issues looming for today’s youth, it's time to offer a greater number of healthy, athletic choices and the cost of skateboarding is accessible to every economic class. Doctors identify skateboarding as a healthy cardiovascular activity that promotes athleticism.
Skateboarding is a Positive Outlet:
Kids and Teenagers specifically need to be able to turn to other things besides violence and drugs and well, doing nothing. The more a person is skateboarding, the more focus and determination they will learn. It's our hope that these attitudes will translate into other parts of their lives.
Skateboarding and Perseverance:
Fall down, get up, try it again. The message is clear. In skateboarding you must try things over and over in order to be successful. This act of perseverance translates into life too. Just as school-work requires deep patience so does learning a skateboard trick. When Tony Hawk spun the "900" he had been attempting it since the early 1990s.
Growth as a Sport:
Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) Sports Participation Topline Report, 2002, shows that skateboarding enjoyed a 14.4% growth between 1987 and 2001 while baseball and football are in the decline, with -24.5% and -17.8% respectively.
Skateboarding and Safety:
U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (2001) states that when compared to other sports like basketball and football, skateboarding is relatively safe. One-third of all skateboarding injuries are suffered by those with less than a week of skateboarding experience. This number is greatly reduced when wearing safety equipment.
