Peggy Sue Webb was born in Butcher Holler, being the sixth child of Melvin (Ted) and Clara "Ramey" Webb. The family continued living in the holler and two additional siblings were born. Ted and Clara moved their family to Wabash, Indiana. Wabash has been among the popular northern destinations that attracted many miners when the Kentucky coal markets declined. Peggy Sue went on to complete her public schooling and graduated from Wabash High School.
Like her older sister Loretta, Peggy has a natural talent for singing country music. She began traveling with Loretta's Road Show and the two talented singers began to collaborate in writing songs. Among the songs they wrote were "Don't Come Home a Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind) and "Love Whatcha Got at Home." Don't Come Home a Drinkin' was recognized in CMT's 100 Greatest Country Songs in the Top 50 and number three in CMT's Top Drinking Songs.
In 1969, Peggy Sue released her debut single, "I'm Dynamite" on the Decca label. This Loretta written composition became a Top 10 hit. She followed with another Top 30 release, "I'm Getting' Tired of Babyin' You." In 1970 she had a Top 40 single "All American Husband." It was also during 1970 that she traveled to England with Loretta to appear at the Second International Festival of Country Music at Wembley.
Peggy Sue was married first to Doug Wells. She and Wells had one child, Doletta Gail Wells. Doletta was a name Peggy created by combining the names of her friend Doyle Wilburn of the famous Wilburn Brothers and her sister Loretta. Peggy's marriage to Doug ended in divorce and Doletta was later tragically murdered by her husband. Peggy is now married to recording artist, Sonny Wright.
In 1971, Peggy Sue and Decca parted ways. Later in 1977 Peggy and her
husband signed with Door Knob Records. She stayed with this label until 1980. During her time on Door Knob she released: "Every Beat of My Heart" (Top 40, 1977), "How I Love You In The Morning" (Top 40 1979) and "I Want To See Me In Your Eyes" (Top 30, 1979). Her last solo release was a song called, "Why Don't You Go To Dallas?" in 1980. Peggy has also recorded duets with her husband, Sonny Wright.
Peggy Sue Wright now makes her home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. She currently sings backing vocals for her younger sister, Crystal Gayle. Although singing and writing are Peggy's best known talents, she also sews some of Crystal Gayle's beautiful stage costumes.
Peggy was the Grand Marshal of the 21st Annual Van Lear Town Celebration and Parade. Many attended our annual music concerts and enjoyed a great music show that featured Peggy and Sonny Wright.
