Bates Spay Foundation (for female dogs and cats)
The Bates Spay Foundation runs on a $1,200 monthly budget and is open to all residents of Carroll County, regardless of their financial situation. It pays half the cost of spaying an animal when the procedure is performed at our clinic. The other half is paid by the owner of the animal. The price the owner pays is $27.50 for cats. For dogs, costs start at $35 and go up based on the weight of the dog. Spaying costs run higher if the animal is pregnant or in heat.
Neuter Vouchers (for male dogs and cats)
The neuter foundation is currently funded by an anonymous private donor who contributes $300 monthly to this worthy cause. Since funding for this program is limited and entirely dependent on donors, neuter vouchers are issued only to Carroll County residents who fall below 125% of the poverty level or are receiving some form of government aid (food stamps, Medicaid, etc.). Any Carroll County resident who doesn’t meet these guidelines is ineligible and needs to take their pet to a local veterinarian to have it neutered. With the voucher, the owner’s cost of neutering is $15 for cats and $30 to $45 for dogs, based on weight.
The spay and neuter programs are vital to the health of animals in our community. Over 300 animals have been spayed or neutered just in the first quarter of 2008. At the current rate, approximately 1,200 animals will likely be altered at the shelter this year. Left unaltered, at the modest rate of two litters per year and two surviving offspring per litter, these animals could have collectively generated another 4,800 unwanted animals in one year alone.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR UPCOMING FABULOUS FUNDRAISERS

GSHS Pet Calendar for 2009
Community First Bank is sponsoring a fundraiser to benefit the Good Shepherd Humane Society that will produce a high quality, full color 2009 calendar, featuring your personal pets!
Each day of the year will feature a different animal’s picture, and each month will have a featured “Pet of the Month.”
For an entry fee of $20 per pet, your pet’s picture can appear in our calendar. This is not a contest, and only the first 365 entries received will be in the calendar, so enter early to ensure your pet(s) a spot. From the 365 entries, the 12 “Pet of the Month” spots will be auctioned off at the Dog Days of Summer Carnival (see below.)
The calendars will be ready for purchase in November, and will make excellent Christmas gifts. GSHS members will receive a price break when purchasing the finished calendar.
For more information, e-mail us at [email protected], or give us a call!

Dog Days of Summer Carnival

This event promises fun for the whole family, pets included. There will be food, games, music, and prizes, as well as contests such as Prettiest Pet, Best Pet Trick, and Most Obedient. Please call Janet at 479-253-2586 if you are available to volunteer. Otherwise, just show up and have fun!

Gala Pawlooza and Big Dawg Party
Friday, August 15, 2008
#2 Pine Street, Eureka Springs (2nd floor above the antique shop at Pine and Spring St.)
This party/auction will have something for everyone. For those of you not completely crippled by the price at the pump, there is the $200 ticket that gets you into the Big Dawg Party at 5:00 PM. Two pictures of Ben Franklin grant access to this elegant soiree featuring fabulous food provided by local restaurants, the sultry sounds of jazz duo Terri Brandt and Gus Smith, and best of all, unlimited drinks all evening! You can get properly liquored up before moving on to the next event, which is also included in the price of your ticket.
The next event in the Gala Pawlooza is a $50 per ticket party and live auction to be held at 6:00 PM. Participants will enjoy the same scrumptious food as the Big Dawgs and dance the night away to music provided by the ethereal Opal Fly, but you’ll have to buy your own drinks without a Big Dawg ticket.
The auction will feature many high-end items from local businesses and artists. One auction is for scuba diving lessons, another for the original artwork used for the event poster created by local artist extraordinaire Zeek Taylor. Also available will be a Kinetico clock, guided fishing and float trips, more original artwork, and lots more surprises!
Dress is Eureka chic. As parking downtown is limited, a free limo service will be provided from designated parking areas.
See you there!
