The Great Escape

About Me

The Great Escape formed in August 2007 and consists of:
Sean Matthews (18) lead guitar and backing vocals.
Michael Bennett (18) guitar and lead vocals.
Jonny Buck (18) drums.
Steven Turnbull (18) bass.
It all started wen bennett was bored and decided to learn guitar, then realised sean had been playing since he was in the womb. They started messing about playing mostly oasis covers, then 4 band members, bout 70 names and a year later the great escape was formed. Our style of music has changed quite abit over the last year depending on what we are listening to when its written. It could be compared to editors, snow patrol, white lies or early bloc party, we all have different influences musically and this comes across in our songs. We have almost a whole set of originals and are adding new material all the time. Our first gig was in October 2007 as a cover band, since then wev developed our own sound and added original material into the mix, which usually goes down better than covers we play. We have played more than 50 gigs, including a slot at 02 academy and whq, we have plenty lined up so if you live in the newcastle/durham area get urself to one of our gigs! We have a demo available and will be recording new material whenever we have the money, so just ask if you want us to send you some of our music.

Sounds Like: Things people have said:

"Anybody who knows my tastes would realise that the next band, The Great Escape, described as Indie Pop, would not be up my street at all. In fact, they would not even be in my neighbourhood. But it's a reflection of just how sharp and attacking these lads were as they commanded my attention immediately with all the character and pazazz that stands out on nights such as these. The lads did it for me in two ways - one, they all looked as though they were enjoying themselves without really trying and, two, they were relaxed and confident. The sound was perfect for these lads which showed off the singer's voice to its full and impressive max. I've never given the Smiths the time of day but the way these lads played so lively and crisp made me sit up and take notice (well, I was standing, but I'm sure you know what I mean). They made a very deep impression on Val too. In fact, after the very first track, we both turned to look at each other and never said a word - but our faces said: 'wow'. I find it very difficult to fault this band. Their own compositions are nothing short of stunning and are the best Riffs has heard in many many years and rival those of north east rockers Skinflint. If the band can get gigs after dropping their covers then they should surely do so as their own stuff is pure magic. A superb band with more potential than you could fit in Val's bra."
