My Autobiography
"Shiver in the Night"
Book Description: He rocketed to the top of the rock scene with his song, 'Avenging Annie', enjoyed stardom for the next four years, and ended it with an outdoor concert. Music icon-rock star of the 1970s, musician-author Andy Pratt bares his heart and soul with candor and honesty in this autobiography, Shiver in the Night. Accompany him in this nostalgic journey, as he reminisces the fame, celebrities, music, family, romance, cruelty, betrayal, and Jesus. He takes readers to memory lane --- during his formative years, youthful folly, music career, and pursuit to get back on track. Truly a primer in mental-physical-emotional survival, this book is can be purchased through the Xlibris website www.xlibris.com. Among the famous names appearing in this book are: Andy Warhol, John Belushi, Miles Davis, Tony Levin, Steve Gadd, the Band, Foreigner, David Gates, Bela Bartok, and Bono (of the band U2).

Andy Pratt was born to a very wealthy Boston family, and grew up surrounded by music, sports, learning, women, and politics. His father Edwin was Headmaster of Cambridge's Browne and Nichols School. His grandmother Ruth Baker Pratt was a representative in the US Congress. His uncle Paul Nitze was Secretary of the US Navy. His great-grandfather Charles Pratt worked closely with John D. Rockefeller. Charles Pratt founded Pratt Institute a private college in New York City, and left a very large family.
Andy was drawn to music as a child, particularly classical music and show tunes. He started piano lessons at eight and picked up the guitar at eleven. He played in his first band at fifteen, and continued to develope as a musician and performer throughout school and college (he graduated from Harvard University in 1968). In 1971 he made his first album Records are Like Life. It was released with the "Boston Sound" on Polydor Records, and remains a special record, with a wide variety of influences. In 1973 Clive Davis signed him to Columbia Records. The record that came out of that is Andy Pratt, Andy Pratt, now considered a classic, featuring several musicians who went on to gain wide recognition, including Rick Shlosser, David Grisman, Abe Laboriel, Gary Anderson, and Andy himself. The leadoff song Avenging Annie was released as a single and reached 1 in Providence and New Orleans, 5 in Boston, and 85 in the Billboard National Record Charts. Roger Daltrey (The Who) covered it in 1976. but Andy's version is much better. After a three-week tour of the East Coast with a band featuring John Scofield, Dave Samuels (Spyro Gyra), Russ Waldren (Judy Collins' music director for many years), and singers Pat Rosalia and Erin Dickens (Greg Allman, Harry Belafonte), Pratt quit music and laid low for a while. In 1976 he reappeared on Atlantic Records, produced by the late and legendary Arif Mardin, who assembled a veritable who's who of studio musicians - Luther Vandross, Steve Gadd, Tony Levin, Andy Newmark, the Brecker Brothers... The album, Resolution (1976), was reviewed for Rolling Stone Magazine by Stephen Holden, who wrote, 'Pratt has forever changed the face of rock.' Andy assembled a touring band and they toured America, appearing with Foreigner, The Band, Loggins and Messina, David Gates, John Sebastian, and headlining themselves. They returned to Atlantic Studios to do one more record with Arif Mardin, Shiver in the Night (1977), then went out for another six months of touring. It all ended in an wildly successful outdoor concert in Boston for 8,000 people, after which the band broke up and Andy went home, unemployed, to his wife. There would be no more money invested in Andy Pratt. This abrupt change was shattering, and the Pratts tried various ways to cope, but nothing really helped until Andy met Jesus Christ on a street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Faith saved their marriage for six more years. During those first years of faith Andy recorded three albums:
Motives (1979)
Fun in the First World (1982)
Not Just For Dancing (1983)
The last two now appear as a compilation called The Age of Goodbye (2004). In those years Andy went to England and Holland to perform for the first time at large festivals. After the marriage broke up Andy moved to New York, and eventually entered the Fordham School of Social Service (Social Work). He played in nursing homes. He got invited to Holland a few more times, and eventually moved there, marrying a Dutch woman in 1988. He got involved in missionary work and traveled to many places in the world, seeing many miracles of healing and deliverance. He made these albums during this period:
Perfect Therapy (1986)
Life (1988)
One Body (1991)
Fire of Love (1993)
Resolution: The Andy Pratt Collection (1996)
Another World (1998)
In 2002 his marriage broke up and he returned to the United States.
In 2003 he released these albums:
New Resolutions (2003)
Heaven and Earth (2003)
I'm Alright (2003)
Cover Me (2003)
Andy Pratt Is Back (2003)
Andy Pratt Solo (2003)
Andy Pratt LIVE at the Village Underground (2003)
He is presently very happily remarried and living in beautiful Amesbury, Massachusetts.
His latest 2008 CD release is Masters of War, features a cover of a Bob Dylan classic. He has another CD in the can called The Snake Charmer which he did in Miami, Florida with producer Fernando Perdomo and some excellent Miami musicians. It was great fun working with them!
He wishes that sanity, peace, and kindness could characterize life on earth but there always seem to be devils and people who want to rule the world and don't mind who or what they destroy in the process. What can we do? Wait for the Judgement and Heaven.
Many blessings to all.
Andy Pratt
