Lydia McCauley

About Me

Lydia McCauley is a singer, pianist, and composer whose compositions are shaped by Contemporary, Folk, and Classical music. Her sixth independent release, QUIETING, is McCauley's first instrumental album. It conveys a deep connection with the natural world and lends her listener a clear and simple musical portrayal of earth's bounty. All-acoustic collaborators include Grammy winner Nancy Rumbel (Narada Label) on oboe and english horn, and celebrated cellist/composer Jami Sieber, Frank Jackson - recorders/wooden flute, among others. From the joyful, childlike dance of Black Walnut and Willow Waltz to the reverie of Hawthorn, the humorous depiction of Porcero Danza (Dance of the Pigs), to the muted smooth Jazz trumpet of The Busy Bees of Sansepolcro, and the soulful journey of Searching for the Clovis Point, QUIETING offers an intriguing, enjoyable soundtrack for those of any age.
Lydia formed the independent music label, Brimstone Music, in 1995 with husband, Kurt Scherer. In 1998 she released her first full length album, SABBATH DAY'S JOURNEY. ["I wouldn't have missed this for anything. The words were just as good as the music." - Madeleine L"Engle, Newberry Award Winning Author] Her second recording ENTRANCES was released in 1999. ["a provocative blend of mysticism, intelligence and beauty" - Connie Dover, Taylor Park Music]
In 2002 Lydia released two more recordings; THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH in April, and THE MOON OF WINTERTIME in October. THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH, which features Lydia's songwriting, rated as the number one selling New Age album 2003 for Goldenrod Music Distributors. THE MOON OF WINTERTIME is a collection of traditional winter songs from the thirteenth Century to the present, including pieces from Italy, Scotland, France and England. Her 2004 release, FOREIGNLANDER, is a collection of Appalachian music from the 17th - 20th Century, newly arranged in Lydia's unique music style. ["This is sophisticated Folk - refreshing, with good energy!" - Dan Maher, Inland Folk, NWPR]
Born in Seattle and raised in the southeastern United States, Lydia grew up studying classical and contemporary music as a child. Later she lived in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee and Kentucky and was introduced to Traditional music. She studied and documented Appalachian music at Berea College. Throughout the years of raising a family Lydia managed her own piano studio. She now lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and producer Kurt Scherer. The two enjoy working together and travelling the world as much as possible. They have recently established a humanitarian venture, THE RED PARASOL PROJECT which helps support young women in Southeast Asia.
