Salsa group Dark Latin Groove better known as DLG, which hit the Latin music scene back in the mid 90’s with their tropical urban mix of salsa and reggae is making a come back. DLG will be releasing their first album in 9 years titled “RENACER,†which is the brainchild of music producer and DLG creator Sergio George.
George decided to revive DLG after hearing comments that they were ahead of their time and that he should do it again. “I didn't believe what people were saying but I thought it was the right time to try it again and at least put the idea to bed, once and for all," says George. "I have nothing to loose if it doesn't work out we are still in the history books, if it does we have a little franchise that we can build."
In this rebirth of DLG do not expect to see the old trio because former DLG vocalist Huey Dunbar declined to participate in the revival of the group. So George decided to feature former DLG member James DaBarba with a new female vocalist who he found on MySpace. Her name is Miss YaYa, who was on season 1 of the MTV reality show “Making the Band 3.†George was so impressed with Miss YaYa's voice he decided to revive DLG featuring her and took Miss YaYa into the project without even giving her an audition.
Music producer Sergio George creator of DLG“When my manager said he was going to send Sergio a message on MySpace I said, ‘What are you doing? That’s probably not even his page and he is not going to answer you back,’†says Miss YaYa. “Thankfully by the grace of God Sergio answered us back wanting to setup a meeting in Miami and ever since then we’ve been DLG all the way.â€
James DaBarba is very receptive of Miss YaYa’s female touch and professionalism that she brings to the group. “I have to say it smells a lot better in the dressing room, that’s for sure,†DaBarba says laughingly. "It really impressed me that she came in with that hard nose professionalism and she caught onto things really quick." Dabarba continues, "What we do is very innovative and it is hard for people to switch from clave to reggae and back to clave. And the fact that she picked it up quickly really impressed me."
DLG’s new album “RENACER†revisits some of their old hits like “No Morira,†“Juliana,†and “Muevete†with Miss YaYa and features new tunes like “Quiero Decirete Que Te Amo†(Laura Pausini), “Toro Mata†(Peru Negro, Celia Cruz) and “Conmigo Quedate.†“RENACER†will also feature special guests like former DLG member Fragancia, Nestor “Ness†Rivero from the Adolescentes Orquestra, and DJ Napoles of NY.
