This Month's Book Releases
Interesting Historical Facts
Annie Burrows --- While researching for "The Earl's Untouched Bride" which comes out in HH in February 2009, I was reading a book about the days leading up to Napoleon's escape from Elba. (Paris Between Empires, 1814 - 1852, by Philip Mansel) Paris was in quite a turmoil. Two men who were injudicious enough to shout out "Vive Bonaparte!" in the Tuileries gardens were beaten to death by the umberellas of a group of women out walking! I wish I'd been able to include that in my book, but it sounded too far fetched to be true!
Lynna Banning --- King Henri VII's favorite scent recipe: 6 spoons rose oil; 6 spoons rose water; 1/4 oz sugar, 2 grains musk, 1 oz ambergris. Boil 6 hours and strain.
Kate Bridges -- Did you know that the Ancient Egyptians used honey to treat skin burns and skin wounds? And that the first type of alcohol ever invented -- mead -- was made from fermented honey? Learn more historical facts about honey from my article: Honey Nectar and Medicine of the Gods
Cheryl St. John --1714 The first patent for a ‘writing machine’ was given to Henry Mill of England
1829 William Burt of the US patented his typographer machine
1868 Christopher Sholes, Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soule patent type writing machine
1872 Thomas Alva Edison builds first electric typewriter
1873 Remington & Sons mass produces the Sholes & Glidden typewriter
1978 Olivetti Company and the Casio Company develop electronic typewriter

Sarah Mallory ~ "Those of you who have read The Wicked Baron will know that my heroine's father (an Italian artist) uses a little snail, a "lumaca" as his signature on his paintings. Imagine my delight when I was researching for this book and found that just such a little snail has recently been discovered at a historic house in southern England, where it has been hiding for a hundred years! It would seem that a small Italian snail hitched a ride to England in 1896 on a consignment of Italian marble used in the making of a balustrade at Cliveden, a beautiful Italianate mansion in Buckinghamshire.
The Wicked Baron is set about 80 years before the Cliveden Snail came to England, but it seems the passion for all things Italian has never faded!"
